Best Wide Angle Lenses for Interior Photography

We recommend the following for interior photography:

  • Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM
  • Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG
  • Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35 mm f/4G ED
  • Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 FI VC USD

Canon 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM

If you are looking for a decent lens for flexible photography, then the Canon EF16-35 mm f/2.8L III USM will take your interior photography to the next level. The lens packs an f/2.8 maximum aperture which is wide enough to take bright images in dimly lit interiors.

Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM Lens, Black...

The lens is extremely clear and produces stunning contrast with very little barrel bend considering the fact that it covers a wide section compared to other lenses.

The lens features Canon's USM (UltraSonic Motor) and the autofocus that gets manual override any time you are short of focus points on your camera. In other words, if your camera gets a little too dark for your autofocus and you are not ready to wait for it to lock on, this lens has got your back.

For protection purposes, the lens is built like a tank making it resistant to both water and dust. This makes it a perfect choice if you will be working in dusty rooms or areas with water.

However, the lens doesn’t have image stabilization which prevents shaking that might lead to low-quality images. So, if you care about this feature you might have to consider our other options such as the Tamron SP.

What we Like

  • Effective zoom lenses for capturing bigger spaces
  • Allows Full-frame coverage  photography
  • Wide f/2.8 opening for brighter photos
  • Fluorine lens coating for protection from environments
  • Manual override for better-customized photos

What we Don’t Like

  • Doesn’t have image stabilization
  • Expensive wide-angle lens
Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM Lens, Black...
  • High performance L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with constant f/2.8 maximum aperture.
  • All-new optical design for significant improvements in outer and corner sharpness.
  • Sub wave length Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) help to significantly reduce flare and...

Sigma SP 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM

If you are looking to capture amazing photos with alluring close-ups for your real estate photography, the Sigma 14-24mm will come in handy. Like most lenses in Sigma’s art line, this one packs a number of features that make it a good pick for interior photography. This is especially if you need decent zoom lenses.

Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM, Black (212954) for...

For instance, it comes with fast autofocus which allows you to take clear photos with smooth backgrounds. The f/2.8 maximum opening ensures that your photos are bright enough even if you are working in poorly lit interiors.

Overall, your images will be highly detailed with accurate colors and minimum distortion. With this zoom lens, you will be able to fit more features of your property into the frame and, therefore, reduce the number of photos you will need to take.

Also, the zoom ring is near the base of the lens and far from the mount which makes it easier for you to tune it comfortably even in situations where it is paired with an SLR with a profound handgrip.

Just like the Canon EF, this model is also water and dust-proof lens for great photography experience. This means you can use it in a variety of situations without worrying about risking the quality of your even images or cameras.

What we Like

  • Outstanding sharpness
  • Ultra-wide field of view
  • It is a dust and splash resistant lens

What we Don’t Like

  • Although the lens has great build quality, it is rather heavy
  • It does not support front filters
Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM, Black (212954) for...
  • Ultra-wide-angle zoom lens
  • Fast F2.8 maximum aperture
  • Falls into Sigma's Art range of lenses

Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35 mm f/4G ED

The Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35 mm/4G ED brings the same amazing features that we have come to associate with most Nikon Cameras. This one packs the same focal range as the Canon EF with great build quality and design.

Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED Vibration...

However, unlike the Canon EF, it has image stabilization which means you will be able to take smoother and high-end images. It also has an inbuilt VR (Vibration Reduction) feature which offers slower shutter speeds up to 4 stops. This way, you can take bright images even when you are shooting in a dimly lit interior.

The wide-angle lens also lets you capture a more complete picture of your interiors. The f/4 focal length covers a broad range while maintaining optimum brightness and depth of field.

The lens also has amazing steadiness even when you are not using a tripod. Its sharp autofocus and rich color rendition will clearly bring out the beauty of your inner rooms to pique the interest of more customers.

This lens does not have the ability to mount the filters directly to the lens. That means you can only filter the images later after you are done shooting. The images might also be a bit distorted at the 16mm level requiring that you go up higher the focal length for better images.

What we Like

  • Good center sharpness
  • Optically stabilized design
  • Ultra-wide field of view
  • Low price tag

What we Don’t Like

  • The distortion is noticeable at 16mm
  • The edges are soft at wide apertures
Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED Vibration...
  • Ideal for wide-angle and "normal" shots
  • Maximum aperture: f/4 ; Offers two focus modes, M/A (autofocus with manual override) and M (manual)
  • Lens construction: 17 elements in 12 groups

Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

The Tamron 15-30 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD comes with a little wider angle compared to the Nikon NIKKOR AF–S. This makes it a better option for photography if you are looking to fit more space into a single frame.

Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 for Canon...

The lens features a constant aperture of f/2.8 with inbuilt optical image stabilization With this, you can take sharp and bright images without using a tripod.

The lens is durable and has weather and dust sealing so you can use it in different environments without compromising its quality.

The only drawback of this photography lens is that it is quite bulky at  1.1kg which is half and kilogram heavier than Nikon NIKKOR AF–S

It also has a round front constituent which is protected by the hood. This constantly moves forward and back when you are adjusting the zoom, but it does not extend past the hood. What's more, the lens has an internal seal that helps prevent it from dust and moisture.

There is also a fluorine coating on the surface of the lens which protects it against dust and moisture while also making it easier to clean smudges on the lens.

What We Like

  • Optical stabilization to prevent distortion.
  • Full frame compatibility
  • Fluorine coating and an inbuilt seal for protection during photography
  • Ultra-Wide view angle
  • Decent autofocus

What We Don’t Like

Best Zoom Lenses for Interior photography

If you are looking for lenses that afford a range of focal lengths, we recommend the following zoom lenses:

  • Canon EF 24-70 mm f/2.8L II USM
  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR
  • Tamron SP 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM packs a number of features that make it a favorite of most real estate marketers. This zoom lens has a large-sized manual focus ring at the front while the zoom rings are placed near the body of the camera. Between these two sections, you will find a mode switch that you can use to alternate between different modes for the best performance.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens + UV Filter +...

The zoom lens is also highly durable with a solid construction and fluorine coating to protect it against harsh weather conditions. This lens is noticeably lighter than the Tamron SP which makes it a better option if you will be moving from one room to another. There is also an O-ring seal that further protects it from water and dust.

Like the Tamron SP, the lens has a ring that is adjustable allowing you to adjust the focus of the images manually to your preference during photography.

However, due to the internal focus of the lens, the thread of the filter does not rotate when focusing. As a result, it is much easier to use filters like neutral density gradients and polarizers.

What we Like

  • It is sharp throughout the zoom range
  • Manual  ring for customization
  • It is a fairly compact lens
  • Constant f/2.8 opening
  • Good autofocus

What we don’t like

  • High price tag compared to other zoom lenses
  • No image stabilization

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm F.2.8G ED VR brings out the real beauty of your interiors with crisp and professional shots. With an aperture of f/28 across and a 24-70 mm zoom range, this zoom lens provides you with a fine resolution and natural color to make your rooms stand out.

Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Zoom Lens...

Apart from that, the lens has a Nanocrystal coat that helps in reducing the flare and ghost effects under harsh lighting. This facilitates the production of greater image clarity. Further, internal focus offers a quiet and fast autofocusing without interfering with the length of the lens. As a result, you can efficiently keep the subject working distance all through the entire focus variety.

If you are taking your photos in a harsh environment, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8 ED is the best solution since it has a rugged construction that includes professional-grade dust and moisture resistance.

Like the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM model, the image quality has enhanced optical zoom which produces exceptional focus, sharpness, and coloring that in turn renders outstanding images and videos for your marketing.

This zoom lens is also compatible with Nikon's VR which helps to produce lifelike and professional-grade images. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR also performs exceptionally even when you are working in dimly lit rooms.

Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2

The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 comes with 3 LD (Low dispersion) elements to minimize axial chromatic aberrations. This is a condition that produces blurred colors on both ends of the focus position when each color has a different focal point. The elements also help to reduce transverse chromatic aberrations which are common with wide-angle camera lenses.

Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 G2 Di VC USD G2 Zoom Lens for...

This combined with the 3 GM (glass-molded aspherical) elements and the hybrid aspherical lens element helps to achieve accurate color reproduction for superior quality images.

If you won’t be using a tripod, you don’t have to worry. The Tamron SP provides 5 stops of stabilization as well as a high-performance MPU to boost autofocusing speed and accuracy.

Unlike other pricier models, this lens is not that fast. However, it is still a great pick for interior photography since it can perform exceptionally in low-light conditions with a fluorine coating for protection from moisture and dust.

What we Like

  • At f/2.8, the results are sharp and are captured at wide angles
  • The system for image stabilization is strong
  • The build-up is excellent
  • The lens is protected from dust and splash.

Best Tilt-Shift Lenses for Interior Photography

Tilt-shift lenses help in eliminating distortion as well as making the images look more realistic. We recommend the following.

  • Canon TS-E ultra-wide tilt-shift lens

Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II

The TS-24 mm f/3.5 Lii is among the best lenses interior photographers because of its ability to support shift adjustments and tilts. Tilt and shift movements allow for flexibility that enables the lens to move vertically and horizontally without having to move the entire camera.

Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Ultra Wide Tilt-Shift...

This way, you can take more stabilized images and footage with this model since you won’t be moving around causing shaking.  This makes it easier for you to capture pictures of the interior while at the same time keeping the lines of the lanes completely vertical for a good shot.

It is also important to note that when shifted, metering does not work effectively. What you need to do in this case is to meter or lock the exposure towards the unshifted position and the shift will definitely back your selected positions.

This lens is compatible with all Canon EOS cameras making it one of our favorite tilt-shift lenses. With a +/- 8.5 degrees Tilt and +/-12mm Shift, you are afforded the much-needed flexibility to take your pics in the most efficient manner. There are also UD and aspherical lens elements to help reduce chromatic aberration and make your images more professional.

The lens has a subwavelength structure with super-spectra coatings that help reduce flare and ghosting while taking photos.  In addition, the circular aperture will enable you to take creative images with blurred highlights for added appeal.

What we Like

  • Flexible to use
  • Produces high-quality images
  • Ultrawide zoom lens
  • Best lenses for tight spaces

What we Don’t Like

  • It is not weather sealed
  • A bit expensive
Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Ultra Wide Tilt-Shift...
  • Tilt and shift lens compatible with all Canon EOS cameras; ultra wide 24mm focal length
  • High-precision lens elements for low distortion and high resolution; +/- 8.5 degrees Tilt and...
  • Aspherical and UD lens elements minimize chromatic aberration

Features to Consider When Choosing Lenses for Interior Photography

For exceptional images, you need lenses that can work comfortably in low-light, have a wide zoom range with a decent maximum aperture, and image stabilization to prevent shaking while taking photos.

Close up of a Canon lens

Maximum Aperture

The amount of light that gets into your lens is controlled by the lens aperture. The maximum aperture determines how wide the lens can open to let light in. A wide aperture will make it easier to shoot in dimly lit interiors since it allows more light in and, therefore, make the images look brighter.

A wide opening also comes in handy if you want to shoot a single subject in your interior (such as the furniture) while ignoring everything else. While lenses with wide apertures are understandably expensive, they make it much easier to capture beautiful and professional images for your portfolio.

Most of the lenses in this guide have a maximum aperture of f/2.8 which is good enough for professional interior photography.

Zoom Range

In photography, zoom refers to the act of bringing a subject closer or further away than it is. The zoom range is the difference in magnification on a photo when you zoom in and out.

The zoom range is an important feature in interior photography for two reasons:

  • It helps zoom in on an important object so that it appears bigger and more appealing.
  • Zooming out helps you capture a wide area even if you are not using a wide-angle lens.

The bigger the zoom range, therefore, the more you will be able to play around depending on how big or small you want your objects to be. The Nikon AF is our favorite zoom lens.

Image Stabilization

This is a feature that helps to reduce shaking and distortion to make your images smooth even when you are not using a tripod. Image stabilization comes in handy if you're snapping in low-light interiors and don’t want your images to be blurred or grainy.

Canon camera lens placed on a table

We recommend getting a lens with image stabilization if the camera you will be using does not have this feature. Again, these lenses are expensive but they will make your images look more professional compared to if they were shaky or with some distortion.

Some of our best picks with image stabilization include Tamron SP and Niko AF-S NIKKOR. These lenses can produce crisp and smooth images and video even when you are not using a tripod.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Wide Should A Lens Be For Shooting Interiors?

A good lens for shooting interiors should be within the 16-35mm range for the best results. This range will allow you to take crisp and high-quality photos even in dimly lit interiors.

Can I Use Kit Lenses For Interior Photos?

You can use kit lenses for interior photos if you are just starting out and operating on a low budget. While they are technically not wide-angled, you can still use kit lenses to capture bigger spaces by using the shortest focal length such as 18mm for an 18-55mm lens. You can also play around with composition techniques and shooting angles of tilt-shift lenses to get the best interior photos.

Conclusion

Interior photography is very essential for your real estate marketing efforts. When clients look at your portfolio, they’ll mostly want to check out interior images of your properties before they decide whether to buy or not.

That is why it is important to get the best lenses to help you bring out the beauty of your property in a unique and professional manner. So, if you are looking for good tilt-shift lenses, zoom lenses, or any other models, this guide will help you boost your interior photography.
