Congratulations to Gary Kasl from Carlsbad, CA; April 2020 Photographer of the Month! The theme this month was master bedroom. I've had the great pleasure of watching Gary grow his business and improve his photography over the past few years and I'm excited to see where he takes things next! Thank you to everyone who participated and to the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.

  1. Gary Kasl - #13
  2. Amir Neshati - #4
  3. Matt Davis - #30
  4. Luke Phillips - #16
  5. Austin Baker - #2

Please feel free to view and comment on any of this month's entries here.

Here is what Gary had to say about the win:

"Oh wow! Thank you all so much! I'm super grateful for the time everyone takes to make this happen... especially during this crazy time.

This was a special property, to say the least. There were so many gorgeous little details and big breathtaking features throughout the entire home, focusing on what to capture became a challenge. This shot, however, was a no brainer. The room was situated just like this so I was able to spend my time dialing in the composition and figuring out lighting. I ended up using a 17mm TSE on my Canon 6D and 2 AD200's. One flash set up to bounce for fill and one with an 18" softbox to mimic the direction of the natural light. I lined up a solid 1-point composition and shifted slightly down and to the right, then took a bracket and 2 flash frames. Aside from some heavy perspective control on the edges, I just used my standard method of blending the image and only slightly cropped in. This home is definitely one of my all-time favorites and I feel so lucky to have clients that sell these kinds of masterpieces.

I'm so stoked! Thanks again!"

  1. Congratulations Gary!! Well done and especially on a “not so easy” shot... considering the rooms moody treatment and a huge water view, capturing the subtleties of the mood and relaxed feel of the interior is a very masterful feat! Now knowing it was so simply done .. i quit lol! i would have over-lit this for sure lol! ... many props!!!

  2. Congrats Gary, it's a fantastic image. I liked so many of this month's photos... it's getting ridiculous!

Amir, getting very close, my man!

  3. Well done, Gary! Like Jenn Verrier said, "You make me want to be there!" Isn't that really the Mt. Everest of compliments for a real estate photography shot?!? At the end of the day, that's the whole friggin' point! Yeah, you're lucky to have clients that list and sell these types of homes, but you bring a real refined style and consistent class to the work you produce. I've seen plenty of equally jaw-dropping homes online whose agents apparently hired butchers to photograph them. As lucky as you are, your clients are just as lucky to have you on their team. Loved reading the summary story behind the shot. I'm psyched to see you and a few other of the heavy-hitters back in the game, grabbing W's and raising the bar of the monthly contest to, as Matt said, ridiculous levels. I hope you and the family are doing well and staying safe in San Diego. Congrats again, man! Great win.

  4. Hey Gary, great job! Congrats. And thanks to the judges for the feedback, which is one of the main reasons I enter the contests. Very informative and useful CC by ya'll judges.

Again, Gary, great job man! And I've seen your general daily work, always top notch.

My English bro Matt, sweet looking shot as always and thanks for the kind words.
