Here is what Tacey had to say about the win:

Wow! What an honor... I've entered a few of these contests and am always in awe of the work that I see. Every image I've submitted has given me concrete feedback that I've used in subsequent shoots. Thanks so much to the judges for the time, effort, and thoughtful critique. I've learned so much from this group and also from the FB groups. How lucky I am to have such a generous group of professionals in this business.

This house is an utterly unique build, embedded in an "Olmsted" garden. The gardens were as important to the homeowner as the house. This shot was one of those that probably wouldn't have been possible any other day. The smoke from the fires was thick on Whidbey and the agent wanted to cancel, but I knew that any other day we'd likely have strong dappled light or just overcast grey to deal with. The quality of the light from the filtered smoke was perfect to show both the beautiful stone and the deep green of the gardens. This was shot with a Sony A6500 and 10-18 lens, using all of the height from my "Polish drone" - my painter's pole. Single image, minor adjustments in Lightroom.

I'm really proud of this image, but it's an incredible house and I was lucky to shoot it. It was the most expensive property I've shot to date. I find it ironic that the day before yesterday, I shot my least expensive property. I guess I mention this because I brought my lights to both shoots. I'm a big believer that every house is someone's home, and I need to bring my best to each one. There are a lot of things that I don't do the "right" way. My business name isn't my own name (just try spelling Tacey). I don't have a website (yet... it's on the list!). I mostly shoot in aperture priority (I've got my reasons). I say this because I really want to encourage others to go for it... even if you don't do everything perfectly or by the book. Learn from every photographer out there whose work you admire. Ask questions, take workshops. Submit your images... even if it's the $48K listing!

Thanks again to everyone who participates in this forum, whether as a participant or a judge... I learn from all of you.

  1. Congratulations Tacey! Beautiful image. Good for you for not letting the agent reschedule on you knowing the unique conditions would be perfect for the situation. Also love your comments about going for it even if you're not doing it technically "right". That's great advice that has resonated with me plenty of times. Enjoy the win!

  2. Great Job!

I'm always impressed with the quality of images that are posted in the contest every month.

  3. Excellent work. Congratulations.

It would be useful to know what height the shots were taken from, and perhaps a little about the equipment (weight, format, wi-fi software).
