Congratulations to Danielle Robertson from Scituate, MA--March 2020 PFRE Photographer of the Month. The theme this month was "kitchen" and we had 55 entries from around the world.  Every March we get to see a great cross section of different kitchen designs across the globe and this year was no exception.

Pierre Galant won last year's contest with this great image.

As usual, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who participated, and to all the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.

  1. Danielle Robertson #34
  2. Pierre Galant #45
  3. Kevin Edge #35
  4. Kristine Kohl #27
  5. Jordan Powers #51

Please feel free to comment on any of this month's entries here.

This is what Danielle had to say about the win:

Wow, this is certainly the best news I’ve heard in a while! Thank you! What an honor! I am humbled by the recognition, and want to acknowledge the other entries this month. I didn’t think I stood a chance. And a huge shout-out to the judges for their detailed comments and critiques. That feedback has helped me immensely over the past few years.

Image Story:

This shot was taken at the end of a long day shooting a home on Cape Cod for an interior designer. We didn’t start shooting the kitchen until around 4pm, since it wasn’t a priority. The designer only wanted me to capture the barstool fabric and countertop, so I did some quick countertop styling and took a shot from the back corner (near the fridge), looking across the island and into the living room. That would've been the last shot of the day, but the natural light was getting pretty sexy, so I quickly moved around and took one more shot facing into the kitchen. And that’s the shot I entered this month. Since it was totally unplanned, the styling elements were completely off for that comp, and don’t get me started on the seahorse!

Technical:

Nikon D750, 50mm, f/8, ISO 200, 1/10 sec + 1/5 sec
Blended two ambient shots in Photoshop, and removed outlets, crumbs, color casts, and cleaned the range and refrigerator. The horizontals were killing me. I figured the ceiling or floor were simply not level, and eventually gave up!

Thanks again folks! Hope everyone is staying safe and well during this crazy time.

-Danielle

  1. Congratulations Danielle! For a last minute “snap” that’s some great work! and your right about the lighting.. when it’s perfect just knowing how to handle it is all it needs! I did nit imagine it was 50mm ... must have had a good amount of space to work with i was guessing 35 ish!

  2. I've been telling Danielle that sooner or later (more likely sooner), she was going to win one of these things. Holy Nostadamus, Batman! Danielle has such a thoughtful and soothing aesthetic to her work, which is obviously on display here in her winning image this month. Not even a misplaced seahorse could topple this one. So nice to see a local kid done good! 🙂 Congratulations to Danielle and to ALL the finalists. Great work from the Top 5! I love seeing the high quality and range of images submitted each month. Here's hoping that everyone is staying safe and sane. Or at least safe...

  3. Wow! These are all amazing and powerful shots. I love them all and think the top 5 should all be excited by their accomplishment. Absolutely stunning photos.
