Congratulations to Pierre Galant from Pasadena, CA--March 2019 PFRE Photographer of the Month!
The theme this month was "kitchen" and I saw 60 entries from around the world. This is Pierre's second POTM win already this year! Thank you to everyone who participated and to the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.
Please feel free to view and comment on any of this month's entries here.
Here's what Pierre had to say about the win:
I am truly surprised and honored to win again! Thank you!
About the image: Living in LA, I often help clients with a background in advertising. Those are ideal clients for me. They understand aesthetics and have a bias for quality over quantity. This client was no exception. It was one of those Hollywood Hills homes that are built on a downslope so steep that most of the house rests on very tall stilts. With no backyard to shoot, I agreed that a concise and well-told story was the way to go. I covered the 1800 SF house with just 9 photographs. This afforded us more time on each shot, thus improving the production value. I also agreed to spend more time on select “hero” shots. This image was one of them. The key was that I cleared the whole kitchen of everything and then added one piece at a time until I achieved a sense of balance. A couch was pushed 45 degrees off to the right as to clear the lower-right corner and a rickety barbecue and chairs were cleared off the deck. As soon as I did that, balance began to appear between the horizontals of the kitchen drawers and the lines of the outside railing. The bird feeder was always there, but I opened the door to make it stand out. The shape of the bird feeder was then balanced by the addition of the coffee maker on the stove. I like to think that the fact that the coffee maker had just been used to make my coffees adds authenticity to an otherwise staged image.
I also want to send a shout out to my friend Michael Lefebvre. Thank you Michael, your images are such inspiration to me, I love your Instagram feed!
Congratulations, Pierre! Outstanding! I love your description of how this all came together. Just beautiful!
That's a stunner. It's so nice when a RE client truly gets it, and would rather have 10 awesome photos than 30 mediocre ones. You crushed this one. Well done Pierre, congrats!
Congrats (again!!) Pierre. Such a terrific photo and description of your process. One of the things that I've always appreciated about you is your commitment to the craft and the artistic creativity within your work. Am so pleased for you on yet another win!
Great work, Pierre. Congratulations!
Who would have ever thought that the suspicious looking Frenchman getting pulled aside for additional security screening at a Canadian airport would win 2 out of the first 3 Photographer of the Month contests just a couple years later?!?!? 🙂 Congrats buddy! Love the image and REALLY love the story behind the image. Great lesson to be learned here. You pulled EVERYTHING out of the image and started slowly adding back pieces, one by one, until you found the proper balance. I realize we're not always afforded the luxury to do that on a real estate shoot, but if you have the time it can certainly make for an excellent image, as seen here. Thanks for the shout out, and right back at ya! Keep up the stellar work.
Congratulations Pierre! I love everything about your picture, from the creative process to the deliverable, and your "less is more" approach. It´s all very inspiring!
Congrats Pierre, a well deserved win with an awesome image!
Easily my favorite image I've seen on this blog in the 4 yrs I've been lurking. Really, really breathtaking. May I ask; do you shoot most of your RE work with the lights off? Tia.
Great shot Pierre, congrats on the win!
Congrats, Pierre. A fine piece of work, indeed.
Hey Peirre, this is a really great shot and very deserving of the win. Congratulations! You're on fire!
