Some Recent Stats about the Benefits of Drone Video on Real Estate Sales

I just ran across some recent stats on the benefits of using drone video in an article on RISMedia.com:

According to MLS statistics, homes with aerial images sold 68 percent faster than homes with standard images. Video tours that incorporate drone footage are also a great way to make your property stand out and to attract new listings. According to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), 73 percent of homeowners say that they are more likely to list with a real estate agent who uses video to market their home; however, only 9 percent of agents create listing videos. An Australian real estate group reported seeing a 403 percent increase in traffic for listings that included video as compared to listings without.

The article has a lot of good stats that real estate photographers that offer drone services can use for your marketing materials.

  1. My drone payed for itself in 2 months. Just make sure your legal. It's a .... becoming an FAA remote pilot but worth it in the long run, don't forget the $1,000,000.00 umbrella policy.

  3. Larry, this is great. It is an uphill battle to convince people in my market to even use video let alone pay the extra it costs. I find they all want drone video and stills but think it should be included in the still price. As though all the extra investment and time is really not worth anything. This is information that I can honestly claim does not come from me as a self proclaimed marketing expert which I am not. But something hopefully they can respect from its source. So it will, I am sure, help me in my marketing.

    What I am finding though is that those who want drone video also want a full video coverage which costs even more. So I am also trying to work out package prices that make all three (stills, drone and ground video) affordable. Do you have any similar studies on video that includes drone and ground level which would include interiors as well as exteriors? And as we have discussed before, using the Osmo or the GoPro with Karma Grip can allow a low investment in equipment that is easy to carry along with your camera and tripod and shoot video as you shoot stills. So one extended visit rather than two separate shoots. And then the video and stills look much more alike as you are normally shooting under the same lighting.

    So more independent studies would be great to send to my clients.

  4. Agents I have talked to in my area aren't aware that a license is required and haven't thought to ask about insurance. They also don't want to pay more than $20 extra for aerial photos right now. There are some agents that use aerial photos and I saw a listing in the last couple of days where that's all they had posted. Surprisingly, the agents posting aerial photos are still using their cell phones for in interior images.

    I'd love to see a breakdown of what areas of the US or the world are seeing an increase in views and sales of home with aerial images. I know that in some parts of the US it's uncommon to see a listing with cell phone pictures. Nearly everything is shot by a professional and video is very common. Again, professional video and not cell phone video. In my area most agents are using their phones and ignoring the plain fact that the top agents that use professional images/video are out selling them by a 4 to 1 margin or more.

    Drones are a tool and aerial images aren't always a good thing. I am collecting images of aerial images to show agents where is doesn't work such as in housing tracts. I see some of these where the images just highlight how close the homes are to each other and how the neighborhood was stamped out with a cookie cutter and finished with a can of beige paint. The photo of the water heater is more useful.

  5. @Ken - Your website says you are in California City, CA. I look up your Zip on Zillow and there are less than 20 properties for sale in your zip code. Ruralness has always been an indicator of the agent behavior you describe. When there isn't a lot of sales in the area agents are not motivated to spend money on marketing.

    I in few markets where I've bought and sold homes in the last 5 years (Seattle and Portland) listing agents must commit to spending marketing $ just to get the listing. This is not the case everywhere. There are many markets around the US where listing agents behave as you describe!

  6. The higher end properties love it.

    They see the value of increased views leading to increased showings which lead to Increased chance of a closing.

  7. I love the perspective that a photo from a drone offers. It is an attention-getter from the get-go as we always love that "birds-eye" view. Likewise, drone images show the bigger picture of the property making them ideal for luxury properties and parcels with land.
