Congratulations to Matt Van Emmerik from Kelowna, BC--August 2019 Photographer of the Month! And no, this isn't a misprint. Matt has pulled off the elusive back to back win. The theme this month was daylight exterior and I had 44 entries from around the world. As always, a big thank you goes out to everyone who participated, and to the jury who continues to volunteer their valuable time and thoughtful insights.

  1. Matt Van Emmerik - #43
  2. Brian Berkowitz -#20
  3. Pierre Galant - #1
  4. Deno Kontoulas - #7
  5. Tacey Jungmann - #34

Please feel free to view and comment on any of this month's entries here.

Here's what Matt had to say about the win:

Wow! I’m super honored to win back to back months and this month was full of really strong entries. Thanks again to Brandon and all the judges for the time they put into their thoughtful comments and constructive criticism.

This image was taken on my iPhone … totally kidding! It was actually taken with my trusty 5D Mark III with a 16-35mm f/2.8L lens at 35mm and further cropped in post.

I was actually walking down to a fire pit area on the property to grab a shot of it and didn’t see this shot until I was on my way back up to the house. The red stairs and incredible light streaming through onto the rocks and stairs caught my eye immediately and I thought it would make the perfect hero shot for this property. It always pays to walk around a house like this a couple of times and duck into the trees whenever you can if you think there’s a shot worth exploring. The straight on front shot is always necessary in real estate but it’s not always the most intriguing or impressive.

Thank you again for the great honor, to the judges, and other entrants for upping the game month after month!

  1. Double congrats, Matt. You are too right about always looking around. I had teacher drive that lesson home and have come away with many photos that were behind me when I thought I was lining up on a good composition. You made an awesome photo of that home. I'd bet that it would only take a couple more to get the phone ringing for that listing and not 40.

You might want to take the some of the prize money and get a few large prints made. One for you, one for the agent and one for the seller.
(I'm kidding, I know there is no prize money but you should still make some prints.)

  2. Congratulations Matt! Really great work. And solid consistency from you, too! The last couple folks to pull off the elusive back-to-back wins were Aaron Kraft and Brandon Cooper (who pulled the even more elusive back-to-back-TO-BACK win!), and that worked out pretty well for those two guys! Enjoy the spoils of victory and then quickly get back to work making more killer images. Well done.

  3. @Michael - thank you very much! I really am honored to win this contest back to back months. I am also basking in the spoils and happy to report I’ve received one new IG follower today and lost three! Haha
