Hero 7 Silver vs Black

Design

Both the GoPro Hero 7 Black and GoPro Hero 7 Silver are similar on the outside. Both of the action cameras are equipped with a lens port at the top. Both of them also have a touchscreen feature that covers the rear area. Also, these two action cameras are waterproof, which means you can use them up to 33 feet underwater. 

Both of the action cameras can be placed inside GoPro's SuperSuit, which is a cover that allows you to go up to 195 feet for deep sea diving. It serves as a protective housing so your camera does not get damaged underwater. 

Connectivity

Both the Hero 7 Black and the Hero 7 Silver support Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity so it will be easier for you to transfer files from the action camera to your computer. The battery life of the two action cameras are the same, they both are rechargeable and they are rated at 1220 mAh.

Both the Hero 7 Black and the Hero 7 Silver have the ability to shoot images and videos in 4K resolution. However, the Hero 7 Silver can capture 4K in 30 frames per second, while the maximum resolution for Hero 7 Black can shoot 4K in 60 frames per second. 

For slow-motion videos, the highest framerate that you can get on the Hero 7 Silver at the 1440p resolution is 60 frames per second. Meanwhile, on Hero 7 Black, you can get up to 240 frames per second in 1080p, 960p, and 720p resolution. The bitrate on Hero 7 Black is 78Mbps, which is a lot better compared to the 60Mbps of the Hero 7 Silver. 

The Hero 7 Black has an amazing stabilization system thanks to its HyperSmooth feature. It allows you to film smooth videos and it prevents the effects of a shaky camera from showing up on the result. It also has larger images, up to 12MP, and you can shoot in RAW format and JPG format. With its HDR function and burst option, it produces high quality images. These features are not present in the Hero 7 Silver. 

Burst Shooting

The premium GoPro Hero 7 Black action  camera can create bursts of 12 megapixel stills that can go up to 30 frames per second. It can also capture RAW format images as well. The action camera has a great number of burst rates and it also offers the ability to shoot time-lapse photos, which is a feature that the GoPro Hero 7 Silver does not have. 

The GoPro Hero 7 Silver has a maximum stills resolution of 10 megapixels, and it has a maximum shooting speed of 15 frames per second in continuous sequential frame rate. 

Major Distinguishing Factor

The GoPro Hero 7 Black has the 4K ability and it can capture up to 60 frames per second. You can shoot in slow motion footage up to 240 frames per second if you switch it to Full HD video mode. That is 8x slower compared to the normal speed. It also has HyperSmooth which is a stabilization function great for videographers. 

The 3-axis system of the action camera can function well underwater and in high wind and high shock shooting scenarios. It also has a TimeWrap mode that distills long time lapse video sequences into short shareable clips. It also has a Short Clips mode that limits capture to a maximum of 30 second bursts. These files are easier to drop into social media accounts. Those who want to record sound with their footage, the unit processes the sound from built-in microphones to give stereo audio. It can also capture WAV format audio. 

Meanwhile, GoPro Hero 7 Silver, which can also shoot in 4K, can only go up to 30 frames per second instead of the standard 60 frames per second that the GoPro Hero 7 Black. The GoPro Hero 7 Silver does not have the HyperSmooth feature.

When to Use Hero 7 Silver

The GoPro Hero 7 Silver is suitable as an upgrade from the other GoPro models. It is a fine choice for beginners that want to practice videography. Although the Hero 7 Silver does not have as many features as the Hero 7 Black, it still has loads of fancy tricks that are beyond its 4K shooting capability. 

The sensor can capture 10MP stills or 15 frames per second in burst. It also maintains the Wide Dynamic Range or WDR feature to help fill in shadows and retain the highlights in the images so the exposure is balanced. You can also use the Touch Zoom that lets you slide your finger up and down the screen to zoom into the scene for better framing. 

The Hero 7 Silver can be used for the following:

When to Use Hero 7 Black

The GoPro Hero 7 Black is an entry-level model in GoPro's Hero series, it offers excellent value. It is an action camera that has amazing software such as TimeWrap and HyperSmooth, which is great because it improves the quality of your images and your videos. 

The stills and video quality is excellent and it has an impressive waterproofing feature that allows you to take it underwater without a case. It is a tough and reliable action camera. 

The GoPro Hero 7 Black can be used for the following:

  • Scuba diving
  • Swimming
  • Surfing

Final Verdict

Both GoPro Hero 7 Black and GoPro Hero 7 Silver have rugged design and they can shoot great quality footage in 4K. If you wish to choose between the Hero 7 Silver vs. Hero 7 Black, the Hero 7 Black has better features. 

If you are a beginner in photography, you can go for the Hero 7 Silver. However, if you need a high-quality camera with image stabilization, great sound quality, incredible time-lapse videos and other additional features, you can go for Hero 7 Black. At the end of the day, the action camera that you purchase should be the one that can meet your needs.
