Learning to change logo colors lets you work on different color schemes and adjust designs for real estate
Quick Navigation
To change a logo's color in Canva, use the color picker tiles for editable elements, or modify the Duotone effect's settings for pre-made logos uploaded in Canva. For Photoshop, use the Color Overlay option for PNG logos. Meanwhile, apply selective hue adjustments or use the Color Replace feature for targeted adjustments.
Working on logo colors can be tricky, especially when there are elements that you can't easily edit. However, with the right technique, you can change the colors of logos using Photoshop or Canva.
One of the easiest methods is to edit Canva's logo templates using the color picker tiles.
If you need to edit logos of uploaded images in Canva, follow these steps after uploading your picture to the editor page.
Duplicate the photo to create two layers using the same picture. This is helpful if you have a separate text and graphical element.
There may be instances where some elements aren't editable using the top panel. To work on them, click the Edit Image option on the top bar and modify the settings at the left-side panel.
You may also crop the logo pictures. Tap one of the copies before clicking the Crop button. Next, drag the crop marks until you achieve the desired size.
If you want to change the whole logo into white or a monotone effect, go to Edit Image and click the Duotone effect.
Go to the Duotone effect's settings and change the palette of colors to whichever color you prefer.
The Replace Color feature is one of the simplest tools to use in changing the color of a logo in Photoshop. This is perfect if you want to sample and replace a color area with a different color.
Most photographers also work on PNG files because they retain quality and details after image compression. However, PNG photos aren't usually ideal for print graphics because they don't support non-RGB color spaces like cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
This is why you need to use Photoshop's color overlay when changing the logo of PNG files in Photoshop. Note that this technique works better if you only need to apply a new color over the logo since there will be little fine-tuning.
Before anything else, ensure your logo has a transparent background. You'll know it's transparent if there's only a gray and white checkerboard at the logo's layer thumbnail.
Do these steps if the picture still has a white background:
Double-click on the logo layer to launch the Layer Styles dialogue box. After that, click the Color Overlay option from the styles menu to choose a new logo color.
This is where you can experiment with various colors from the color palette to edit your logo.
This technique works much better if you mostly need to apply hue adjustments to a logo. Thus, it won't work well for black and white logos into a colored version.
The first step is to put a new hue saturation adjustment layer above the logo layer.
You will see the Master lab once you open the hue saturation adjustment layer. This is where you can adjust the global Hue, Saturation, and Luminance values.
There may be instances where a logo has two colors, yet you only want to apply hue adjustments to a single color.
To make a logo in Canva, you can use the Canva logo templates and change the colors. You may also start from scratch, using a new document to work on shapes, lines, letters, texts, and other graphic design elements.
In Photoshop, you can change the fill color of a logo if you work on the Layer Styles and use the Color Overlay. For Canva, you'll need to check on the editor toolbar if the color picker appears when you click on the element. Otherwise, you cannot add a fill color to the logo.
Work on layer mask adjustments to keep the text in the logo untouched. To do this, press Command/Ctrl + J to duplicate the logo layer, right-click the FX icon, and select Clear Layer Style. Next, use the Brush tool to make the layer transparent and change the background color.
For Photoshop, you can use Color Overlay, Color Replace, and selective hue adjustments to change a logo's color. Meanwhile, you may use the color picker tiles or Duotone effects for Canva edits. We hope these steps make it simpler for you to edit logos, especially when you need to update colors.
