Why having a nice camera and wide angle lens does not make you a professional

  1. Goes right along with this:

"A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, the host said 'I love your pictures; you must have a fantastic camera" He said nothing until dinner was finished. then : "That was a wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific stove" -Sam Haskins

  2. Haha, Thank you. We were hoping it would crack you guys up!! What really inspired it was an agent who called me couple weeks ago to re-shoot a house that had been previously photographed by someone else (the photos were pretty bad UFW etc). She said she hired him because I was booked and he had the same camera as me. GRRRRRRR!!!!

  3. In the same vein... a new photographer was asking my advice for equipment and my only answer was to put your current investment into learning the skills of photography. A master pianist can play any piano well, but what good is a classic Steinway grand piano if all you can play is chopsticks?!?

  4. From my own experience here in New Mexico, most RE agents cannot see any difference between good and bad photography, they are numbers people, not pictures people.

  5. Until buyers see the difference, agents wont see the difference. What is the difference between gas at a self service station and gas at a full service station?

  6. Thanks Brian,
very funny and makes a great point as to how many people think they are a photographer.

I've met many agents at real estate events here in FL, who bought expensive cameras and wide lens because Photography is their hobby and they don't want to pay for a professional.

  7. Rohnn - Many times when I photograph a home for a listing, the home owner will ask me what kind of photos I make. I show them the back of my camera the photos I've already made and they are very relieved that my photos don't look at all like all the bad ones they have seen on MLS as they check the listings. I find home owners to be more savvy on what's good and bad photography than the agents selling the houses. Like I said above, agents are numbers people, that seems to be all they understand.

  8. That was fantastic ! I have recently viewed real estate photos from one of my former photo competitors who went into home sales(agent) due to his failed photo business...he still clearly does not understand photography even though he was a "professional" at one point.(Had expensive gear)
I have not yet stepped into this arena (have been asked) as I never considered it viable...guess I was wrong. 🙂
