Unbelievably Bad Real Estate Photos

Over the years, I've made it a habit to occasionally pass along some of the sites that feature bad MLS photos. It's frankly amazing how many of these sites there are. These sites are always good for a few laughs. Here are several sites that I've come across recently:

It's just amazing how lazy and ridiculous agents are who actually post these photos on listings!

While most of the shots are bad from the photographic/photographer stand point, my heart still goes out to the pros who need to eat and feed their families but to do so have to work for folks that pay little and have really bad houses to shoot. I am a member of a British RE Photographer's FaceBook group since I want to see what they have to deal with and having worked in the UK professionally, I feel I have some slim membership rights. Along with generally very poor pricing, the whole commission structure in the UK is very different from that here in the US. So there is not much money for the average joe to be paid from. And so many are rentals where the renters are still living in the houses and have no skin in the game as the saying goes to clean up and declutter. I have seen many shots they have posted as the photographers wring their hands and say "if I want to get paid, I have to shot it!" There have been a few where there was someone who refused to wake up and get out of bed as the photographer got to the room. But the photographers had to shoot fast and move on for 50 Quid a shoot.

    I had a shoot for a multi million USD property yesterday where the main mansion was perfect, beautifully decorated and furnished. But when I got to the guest house, it too was immaculate and lovely, a photographer's dream, but the kids were still living there but just moving out and their clothing was strewn around the bedrooms, open suitcases and a family dog that was guarding everything issuing threats from the back of its throat. So I did not shoot them. I would not shoot something that my client could not use and would damage a sale rather than enhance it. But not every photographer in whatever market or country has that luxury.

    So yes, many really wretched photos, but also some that may have given the photographer no choice other than to walk away and loose his fee or shoot the damn thing. There is often a back story to some of these photos.

  2. Many of the "bad" photos are just photos of funky spaces. The photo itself, while not perfect, isn't as bad as what's pictured. We have to take photos of what's there to get paid.

    I have a giant folder of poorly composed images on my hard drive that I use when I make presentations. I am nice and don't attribute them since there is a chance that the agent that took one could be in the audience. One of these days I'm going to pick up a horrible P&S camera and create a batch of images with all of the mistakes I constantly see and then photograph the property properly with my regular camera for presentations.

  3. Pretty funny stuff.. definitely agent shoots. I think the worst shoots we had that I recall was a beautiful home where the owners (young Asian family) kept moving everything from room to room so we could photograph the rooms. This involved tons of stuff and it took around 20 minutes to do this each time. But, that wasn't all.. when we got to the converted garage the owner decided the floor didn't look good enough and proceeded to scrub wash the whole floor while we waited.
    On a recent shoot there were large dog cages in the main room and these had to be moved which the homeowner did. We had a shoot a long time ago where the guy, I assume he was the husband, refused to get off the couch so we had to shoot over him.
    We've been shooting listings for a very long time and you kind of get used to things like this. For example, we always take the time to straighten bed pillows and spreads and close closet doors that are crammed full of stuff.
    But, by the same token, you have to be careful not to break anything in the process so it's always best to get the listing agent if they're there or the homeowner to move things.
    As for the house from hell, fortunately agents don't hire professional photographers for places like that.. at least not around here.
