Some Great New Features On Their Way In Lightroom 5

Published: 16/04/2013
By: larry

Today Adobe released a free beta version of Lightroom 5 that you can install alongside your current production version. Adobe usually has a beta version for major Lightroom updates where they accept user feedback and let users "kick the tires" for a few months.

There are a bunch of cool new features in the beta for you to try(the links below are to Julianne Kost videos explaining the new features:

  1. Advanced healing brush
  2. Radial Gradient
  3. Upright
  4. Offline editing with Smart Previews
  5. Video slideshow sharing
  6. Improved photo book creation

For real estate and interior photographers the feature that grabs your attention as the most significant is upright (#3) which is a major improvement to straighten tilted images with a single click. Upright analyzes images and detects skewed horizontal or vertical lines. You choose one of four correction methods, and Upright can even straighten images where the horizon is hidden.

As Julianne explains, this beta version of Lightroom 5 won't convert your Lightroom 4 catalogue you have to create a new catalogue of images to use with Lightroom 5 (but the final release will). Also, this is a beta application so don't use your original images; use copies.

Also, you can ask the developers questions or give them feedback on Lightroom 5 beta release at: forums.adobe.com/community/labs/lightroom5/.

  1. I tried this with several of our jobs last night and it's amazing! You can batch correct the verticals and it is almost 100% perfect. It doesn't correct drastic downward shots but that's expected. I would say this should trim 20-30% or editing time for most jobs. The advanced healing really should have been more like content aware fill from CS6 but I guess they have to keep as many reasons as possible to try and get us to pay for both.

    very exciting

  2. Thanks for the heads up Larry: PFRE on the cutting edge and keeping us up to date as ever: I agree with Ryan, the verticals correction is going to be very useful to users without tilt and shift lenses.

  3. I´d just start to try LR5 beta and the new feature of vertical correction is just amazing! It worths to export the image from LR4 to LR5 and make the corrections. Works very well. And easy!
