Joe McNally on The Trend To Small Flash

Published: 10/04/2009
By: larry

There was a recent article in USA Today that both promotes Joe McNally's new book, The Hotshoe Diaries, and talks about the huge trend that's been going on towards using small strobes. Much of Joes book gives insights on using small strobes from the point of view of a Nikon shooter. Apparently, it's valuable as well for Canon shooters.

This trend that Joe talks about is the same thing that those of you familiar with have seen. Scott Hargis and Thomas Grubba's workshops show you how to make use of small strobes when lighting interiors.

There is a interesting interview with Joe were he talks about his book and his use of small strobes on the TWIP (This Week in Photography) podcast. To find it search for "TWIP" in the iTunes store and download podcast #83 (titled "The looming Convergence for free").

Update 4/11: Here is a link to a page that has a MP3 with the TWIP 83 podcast  for those that don't have iTunes or are having trouble finding it on iTunes.

  1. I've just finished devouring this book. It's a beaut! Divided up into manageable mouthfuls each beginning with a stunning photo supported by just a page or 2 on how it was lit. Joe writes in an amusing style. He unashamedly spruiks the SB900 (Spruiking is the act of standing in a public area (usually outside the related store) and advocating (quite loudly) the offers and bargains to be found inside (usually with the aid of a megaphone)).

  2. Great blog post! I work for Peachpit Press and I wanted to let you and your readers know about a promotion we have going on.
