Congratulations Darren Asay! May 2020 PFRE Photographer of the Month

Published: 24/05/2020
By: Brandon

Congratulations to Darren Asay from Orange County, CA; May 2020 Photographer of the Month! The theme this month was detail shot. With 48 entries from around the world, Darren's entry was the clear favorite.  Many of the photographers in the PFRE community have been asking how he captured this unique composition.  As usual, thank you to everyone who participated and to the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.

  1. Darren Asay - #23
  2. Matt Davis - #40
  3. Austin Baker - #12
  4. Tacey Jungmann - #45
  5. Amir Neshati - #36

Please feel free to view and comment on any of this month's entries here.

Here is what Darren had to say about the win:

Wow! I must admit that the moment I read the message about the big win I jumped up and told my 12 year old all about it. He patiently waited for me to finish and then exclaimed, "Dad, I'm in a zoom meeting with my teacher at school." Honestly, I was so excited, and as I write this, I still am. Thank you to the judges and everyone that gave feedback and commented on the shot.
Here's a bit of background on the image: I was on location for 2 days shooting this property so I had some time to figure out how I wanted to approach the bath. It took some serious maneuvering, but I managed to get a 6-ft step ladder and two tripods in a strange catapult like looking position so the camera could be directly over the tub. Oh, and I'm on top of the ladder leaning over holding on to one tripod with one hand and my iPad in the other, triggering the shot. I really wish I'd had someone take a photo of me doing that. That would have been a winning shot for sure!  🙂
Gear used: Canon 5D Mark4 with tilt-shift lenses. I set up one Xplor 400 light behind me and just ceiling bounced it at 1/2 power. I grabbed that long cutting board from the kitchen; everything else was up on the counter and I tried to create what you now see.
Thank you PFRE for all your great content and support. Stay safe out there everyone!
