Congratulations Matt Davis--February 2019 PFRE Photographer of the Month

Published: 25/02/2019
By: Brandon

If it sounds like I'm repeating myself, it's because I am!  Matt Davis is once again the PFRE Photographer of the Month for February. The living room/family room contest always brings out a good crowd and this year was no exception. We had a PFRE record-breaking total of 60 entries this month from 10 different countries around the world. The demand for high-quality real estate and interiors photography is on the rise and we are so proud to showcase some of the best talent out there.

  • See Matt's winning image here.
  • Check out the Jury's commentary here.

As usual, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who participated and to all the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.

  1. Matt Davis- UK #27
  2. Stefan Randholm- Spain #25
  3. Dan Solomon- California, USA #10
  4. Jeff Johnson - Ohio, USA #55
  5. David Calaveras - Spain #9

Please feel free to comment on any of this month's entries here

Here's what Matt has to say about the win:

I'm very happy to have won this month's contest! Thanks to the jurors who voted for me and for the comments on the image. It looks like it was a tough job for the jurors with so many images and so many of them of such good quality. This image was the second establishing shot of this space after I'd taken an angled shot towards the fireplace. The composition was a fairly obvious one to choose and I used a Canon 6D and Canon's 24mm shift lens, and shifted down a bit. The final image is a composite of 7 exposures, although I probably could have done it using 3 or 4. As it was a very nice house, I was happy to go the extra mile. I used 3 ambient layers; the brightest was shot at 1/5sec (f/7.1, ISO 320). I used 4 flashed frames; one was bounced into the far right, top corner of the room; one into the far left, top corner; one above the doors in the middle; and one, behind camera, aimed directly at the windows/doors. This last one was for the view and layered using darken blend mode. I was keen to have the image suggest a bit of indoor/outdoor living, which as a concept, is rather basic when it comes to London city homes! This home is in a fashionable garden square in Chelsea.

  1. Thanks to everyone who make this contest happen and especially to the judges who take the time to comment on so many of the photos. I went through every photo making my own criticisms, and then comparing them to the comments from the judges. It was a great exercise and by the time I came to my image (last one submitted) it was obvious what I could have done differently without even having to read the comments. That to me is the real value of this contest, since it's difficult to get constructive criticism anywhere else.

  2. Congratulations Matt for your outstanding image this month. Award well deserved for someone with a work like yours. I want to also give thanks to all the jurors for the comments with kind words and be grateful for my 5th place. Such an honor!
