The theme this month was "kitchen" and we saw 60 entries from around the world. This is Pierre's second POTM win already this year! Thank you to everyone who participated and to the jurors who took time out of their busy schedules to contribute their votes and thoughtful commentary.
Please feel free to view and comment on any of this month's entries here.
Here's what Pierre had to say about the win:
I am truly surprised and honored to win again! Thank you!
About the image: Living in LA, I often help clients with a background in advertising. Those are ideal clients for me. They understand aesthetics and have a bias for quality over quantity. This client was no exception. It was one of those Hollywood Hills homes that are built on a downslope so steep that most of the house rests on very tall stilts. With no backyard to shoot, we agreed that a concise and well-told story was the way to go. We covered the 1800 SF house with just 9 photographs. This afforded us more time on each shot, thus improving the production value. We also agreed to spend more time on select “hero” shots. This image was one of them. The key was that we cleared the whole kitchen of everything and then added one piece at a time until we achieved a sense of balance. A couch was pushed 45 degrees off to the right as to clear the lower-right corner and a rickety barbecue and chairs were cleared off the deck. As soon as we did that, balance began to appear between the horizontals of the kitchen drawers and the lines of the outside railing. The bird feeder was always there, but we opened the door to make it stand out. The shape of the bird feeder was then balanced by the addition of the coffee maker on the stove. I like to think that the fact that the coffee maker had just been used to make our coffees adds authenticity to an otherwise staged image.
I also want to send a shout out to my friend Michael Lefebvre. Thank you Michael, your images are such inspiration to me, I love your Instagram feed!
