A Couple Of Relatively New PFRE Blog Features Worth Highlighting

Published: 01/07/2016
By: larry

TwitterOver the last 6 months or so I've added a couple of new features to the blog that I think are worth highlighting.

The PfreBlog Twitter Timeline
For many years I've used Twitter to announce each post I do on the blog. But in the last 6 months or so I've started also Tweeting links to articles that are of interest to real estate photographers. Readers send me links to articles they find and I also see articles that don't always warrant a blog post but are clearly of interest to real estate photographers so I Tweet them so they show up on the blog sidebar. I also retweet tweets by other real estate photographers that I think are interesting.

I found a WordPress Widget that neatly displays a huge amount of a Twitter Timeline on the blog sidebar and allows readers to scroll through the timeline and click on the links to articles referenced in the post. This Widget is now on the right-hand sidebar and is in effect a list of real estate photography articles. So readers can make use of it without a Twitter account. You just scroll through it and click on articles of interest.

The UTC Contest Clock
Because readers of the PFRE blog and participants of the still and video contests are spread out globally (153 countries) I've always had trouble talking about contest start and end times and dates. For a long time, I just was sort of fuzzy about the end time of contests or used Pacific Time. As if anyone in the UK or AU knew how to quickly determine what that was.

I don't know why it took me so long to figure out that I need to just use Coordinated Universal Time abbreviated as UTC. UTC is a world time standard the same time as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and Zulu (the military name for GMT) time. A few weeks ago I found a widget that displays UTC time from the World Time Server. So I put the widget just below the contest Flickr group links on the left sidebar and I now use UTC or contest closing and voting closing.

I still don't completely understand why as a 24-hour clock UTC rolls over from 23:59 to 12:00 and then to 01:00 rather than 00:00 and then 01:00. It doesn't seem to be a widget bug because the time on the World Time Server does the same thing. Maybe someone familiar with Coordinated Universal Time can explain it to me.
