Here’s what Matt has to say about the win:

Wow, I must admit to being surprised to win as there are a few really strong images, although I guess that’s par for the course in this great competition. Having entered many times previously I’m stoked to have won this month’s, and it’s a very nice feeling. Being as it feels like I’ve won an Oscar I need to mention a few people with thanks – namely Larry for operating this blog which is such a fantastic resource of knowledge and opinion for thousands of RE photographers. Thanks also to Scott Hargis for being the first big inspiration to me when I knew nothing about photography – his book and video series were absolutely key to my learning. Barry MacKenzie’s speeded up BTS videos on YouTube provided me with the lightbulb moments which informed my current process and style. There are too many photographers to mention whose work and critiques have helped and inspired me over the years, and continue to do so. I’m always grateful to Julie Mannell and Tony Colangelo in particular who must spend way too much of their time giving seriously detailed critiques to other photographers – it does help enormously though. Thanks also to all the people who enter each month and make winning so difficult. I’ll be getting on the Guinness in a couple of hours’ time to celebrate.

A bit of background about the image – this was the main part of a double reception room in a 4 bed apartment in Kensington, London which is up for sale and rent. I’d photographed it previously but it was completely empty, so this time around my client had persuaded the owner to stage it with furniture, paintings and ornaments etc, and what a huge difference it made. I used a Canon 6D with Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens, set the camera up high enough to get a reasonable view over the mustard chairs and the shifted down. It’s a composite image of 4 frames – one over exposed ambient almost got me there. I used 2 flashed frames (I only use one handheld speedlight) to tame the main highlights which were affecting the window, sofa and coffee table areas, and used another flashed frame to get a little more detail in the windows. A little cloning and a small vignette finished the job.

  • Well it’s about time you won one! Congrats Matt. I knew it was yours as soon as I saw it and also knew it would be tough to beat. It’s got your signature light and feel all over it. Enjoy the well-deserved win AND, most importantly, the Guinness!

  • I have to tell you, Matt, I see this win as a sort of “double” win for you … first, for a *terrific* and very special LR shot! Second, to me (and a great many others, I’m sure) this win also symbolizes recognition for being one of the most talented and respected shooters in our community — one who’s maintained a consistently high standard of work, year after year! A heartfelt congratulations, Matt … a long overdue win, for sure! Let the Guinness flow!!
