Moving from Wedding to Real Estate Photography

I have been a photographer for 25 years. I started in Architectural/Interiors but moved to high profile weddings when that market was good. I was successful in that business but now I’m getting back to real estate as I turned 50. I know I need to get in front of the top producers. I have been stopping in to Keller Williams and meeting with their Brokers, shooting some team portraits and head shots. I gave out a tri-fold brochure with sample shots and pricing packages. I’ve gotten a couple listings. I know I need to design a fully dedicated Real Estate Photography Website but I’m not there yet. For now I have my main website which has great content for all of my services. What is the single most important thing I can do to get the Realtor’s eyeballs to book more listings?

It sounds like you are on the right track meeting with listing agents face to face, shooting team portraits, and handing out a brochure about your services.

My guess is that in your market (Ft Lauderdale/Palm Beach/Weston FL) you have some serious competition. So you will need a knockout portfolio and present it well. When I go to your current website, I’m blown away by your wedding photography but I have to work at finding your real estate images. You need a real estate website that promotes your real estate work like your current site promotes wedding photography!

Your real estate/interiors portfolio is the center of your marketing efforts so having a great portfolio and presenting it on a portfolio site where there is not a lot of distractions from the wedding and other types of photography is key.

There’s more than just one thing you need to do. My list of things you need to do is:

  1. Study your competition so you understand what’s important in your local market and who you are competing against.
  2. Keep up your face to face contacts, it generally takes around a year to build up a profitable business in most markets.
  3. Make a dedicated real estate photography portfolio site.
