briandohertynov2016Congratulations to Brian Doherty of Boston, MA who the jury has voted PFRE Photographer of the Month for November. This is Brian’s third win as the PFRE Photographer of the Month. The other two wins were June 2016 and July 2015.

Here are all the entries that the jurors awarded points to this month:

  1. Brian Doherty
  2. Caleb Vandermeer
  3. Richard Hookway
  4. Larry Gray
  5. Matt Parvin
  6. Brett Gray
  7. Brandon Cooper
  8. Matthew Stallone
  9. Andrew Pece
  10. Aaron Kraft

There was a three-way tie for fourth place between Larry Gray, Matt Parvin, and Brett Gray.

Here is Brian's description of his image:

Wow! What an honor. Thank you so much, jurors! There is no better compliment than to be recognized by your peers. What a great Thanksgiving treat!

When I did my walk through, I knew this composition was going to be one of the money shots of the home. I really love how the leading lines pull you through the photo into the dining area and back laundry room.

I created this image with the ambient light doing all of the heavy lifting. It was a beautiful over cast day and I could not have asked for better light. I also used a Profoto B1 through an Octa camera left, to augment the light coming in from the windows. I finished it off in Photoshop and Lightroom with raw adjustments and some dodging and burning.

  1. Congratulations Brian, nice shot, beautiful lighting.

I also want to say that all the entry's are beautiful. Brett Gray's night shot is very intense.
I love the natural color balance when there is no incandescent lighting, and the fact that you can actually see the detail in lighting fixtures without the over exposed bulbs burning out.
I have been thinking about shooting more and more of my homes (day shots) without turning on the interior lighting, but I have all my agents trained to turn on every light when they get there, or have their home owners turn on all the lights.
I tried shooting a couple of homes with out turning on the lamps, but got questioned about it by my realtors and asked me to please keep the lights on.
Brian, how large is that Octa Box, and is that strobe battery or AC powered? I use Elinchroms and their 74" Octa box for natural looking portraits, as the lighting is fabulous. But, I never thought of bringing it on a RE shoot as it is so large and hard to maneuver. Now you have me re-think about using it more often to simulate a large window light. Nice shot!

  2. I think we should all vote and ask Brian not to submit any more photos....he's too good! He's the Michael Phelps of Interior/R.E. Photography!!

Seriously man, just fabo work!! Congrats!

  3. Thank you everyone for the kind words and feedback!

@EricMHilton I used the 3' otca here and the Profoto B1(battery power). I normally only use it on the very high end homes. Its one of those peaces of gear that I keep in my car incase the situation calls for it. I had the space and the time to bust it out so I took advantage of it.

  4. @Brian Doherty,
I shot a beautiful home today, and after reading your comment about your octa box, besides using my stand mounted bounced flash units aimed at the walls and ceiling, I also set up my smaller SP 19" octa box and Sunpack 120 J flash, shot directly into the room to give natural window light effect. it worked very well, and might start using this more often. it was easy to set-up, but wish the octa box was a bit larger.
I noticed that Cheetah Stands (I have three of their auto stands) sells a 33" inexpensive Octa beauty dish at a reasonable price.
congratulations again. good idea for using the Octa box
