This last week Tony Colangelo in Victoria, BC told me that his photos helped four of his clients win the top prize in the 2015 CARE Awards. The CARE awards are a big event for the Victoria Residential Builders Association. Tony said:
Last week, the largest professional builders' association on Vancouver Island (the Victoria Residential Builders Association) announced its 2015 CARE Awards at a very large gala celebration at the Empress Hotel, in Victoria. The event is like the "Oscars" for the building community; and, just like the Oscars, the awards are broken down into many different categories, based on the type of build/renovation/work that was done. In order to get nominated for these Awards, builders, interior designers and millworkers/cabinet makers have to submit photos of their respective projects, as part of a very intensive application process. The CARE oversight committee then selects finalists for each category, with winners announced in the Fall... my images contributed to numerous builders, interior designers and cabinet makers receiving Finalist nominations in 13 categories (out of approx. 45 categories in total.) I'm especially proud that clients in four of those categories went on to win the top award: the Gold CARE Award! See the four images above.
If you are a PFRE Flickr forum regular you will recognize some of these images. Tony has posted some of them to the PFRE Flickr group in the last few months. Congratulations Tony! Great images! By the way, if you want to learn how to create images like this Tony is a PFRE Coach so you can contact Tony via the PFRE Coaching page for some one-on-one coaching.
Beautiful photographs!
Just wondering what equipment and technique did you use to take those photographs?
Congratulations Tony! Well deserved.
Great Job Tony! They look awesome.
@Tim … thanks Tim! And BTW, bud, I love what you’ve done with your website -- very classy + lovely galleries! Very nice look and feel - certainly speaks to your "brand"! 🙂
@ Kerry … thanks so much Kerry!
@ Marek … am glad you like the images! to answer your question, my equipment is the Canon 6D using either the 17-40 or 24-105 L-series lenses. As for technique, well, I used the techniques that I’ve learned on this site, through the generosity of others! In short: assess/understand the client’s need re: key features elements; do a walk-through (preferably with the client) to gauge potential shooting angles; take a test shot using Scott Hargis’ method of exposing for the brightest thing in the room for which I want to retain detail and take that shot; look at the shot and think through where I need/want to put flashes; get a suitable flash exposure; shoot a set of bracketed ambient shots; go home and pick the best ambient shot(s) and hand-blend with the best flash shot(s); put through ACR, PS and Nik. Hope that helps
You Rock Tony! Your works gets better every time I see it.

@ Adrian ... Much appreciated, Adrian, thank you!
Beautiful stuff, Tony!
What I think is important to note is that it shows the care you took in capturing the details of these spaces. Because of the lighting and composition, I found it easy to let my eyes wander around and take in the craftsmanship of these spaces. I'm sure this helped your clients immensely!
@ Jim ... thanks so much for your very thoughtful reply, Jim! I'm glad you saw the value in photos re: showing off the craftsmanship 🙂
Why is this not a surprise? 🙂 Congratulations to you and your clients, Tony! Great work.
