October 25th, 2015

2015-OctRichardHookwayCongratulations to Richard Hookway, of Hampshire, UK who has won the October photographer of the month. The UK folks dominated this month’s contest. Probably because shooting with large poles has been popular in the UK for a long time. They may have invented PAP.

  3. #10James Torrenzano – Ashburn, VA
  4. #20Walt Simpson – Melbourne Beach, Florida
  5. #21Adrian Mace – Leeds, UK

Don’t forget to check out the comments in the PFRE Flickr contest group by jurors and others.

Here are Richard’s comments:

I am absolutely delighted to have won the contest this month, and I am genuinely grateful to those who voted for my image. Thank you!

I was really taken with this house when I originally captured the images back in February 2013. Unfortunately due to the time of year the trees in the surrounding woodland were bare. I was confident that I could improve on my previous shot, so recently called the owner who was kind enough to let me re-shoot grounds.

I shot this using a wirelessly tethered Canon 5D MkII, 17-40L lens, on a handheld 40ft pole, at a height of around 25-30ft.

It feels like is the first year that the elevated theme has had such a mixture of UAS and pole shots. At first thought, it seemed like perhaps UAS shots and pole shots should be separated into different themes but after seeing this mixture and thinking about it more a pole and a UAS are just two different approaches to achieving the same thing, an elevated front shot. I think the jurors seem to agree that a great front shot is what the essence of this theme is about, not a neighborhood shot from 300 or 400 feet.

  • Congratulations Richard Hookway, nice images.

I truly like the way your interiors look as if they were lit with natural lighting. I also think the color balance looks great.

When do you decide which lamps and lights to turn on, or keep off?

My first instinct when shooting a home, is to automatically have my agent turn on all lights and lamps. Then, I have to correct many times in post processing.

    Again, congratulations, nice work
