Here are James’s comments:

I have the pleasure of working on Long Island, NY where we have so many homes in such a small geographical area. If you travel 15 miles north or south you will be sitting on one of our beautiful beaches, and 30 minutes east of me are the world renowned Hamptons. Because of this unique landscape I felt I needed to acquire a mast to capture the beauty surrounding these amazing homes. After lots of research and many people saying don’t do it, I decided “go big or go home” and I bought a 58 foot pneumatic mast. This particular shot was taken in Center Moriches, NY and was taken with the mast fully extended. Interestingly, this home wasn’t the home that I was scheduled to shoot. I was shooting the home next door. After I snapped the shot of the schedule home I could see that I was getting a great view to the southeast so I spun the camera and snapped this shot. I knew it was something special when I captured it. This shot made me realize that backing away from homes and getting them from a distance at full height gives me a beautiful perspective. My clients love these shots, and they love seeing the reaction from their homeowners as I shoot them and provide a live view on my laptop. The mast has been a wonderful addition to my business and has given me another advantage over my competitors. Thank you to the judges, I am thrilled.

Thanks for everyone’s participation. I’ve put the entrant names and points on all the photos in the pool. Please feel free to comment on all the images.

  • Congratulations James! Such a terrific capture and a very deserving winner…well done!

  • Indeed, Congratulations!

  • Thank you Gentleman!

  • Great photo James, it’s always nice to get a little farther away for an elevated photo to pull that background in and still be looking at the home from 50-60 feet up, rather than down on the property. There’s just no beating that view, congrats!

  • Jason and Tony, your images were incredible. I am thrilled to be competing in the same category as you. I have learned a lot looking at your images over the past year.

  • That’s so nice of you to say, James … thank you! I’m very flattered, and I’m sure Jason is too 🙂 I’ve learned a LOT from Jason as well, and so many others in our terrific community. The discussion group is such great learning experience and we’re all fortunate to have each other to bounce ideas off of, and get constructive feedback on our work. In any case, James, congrats again on your winning photo – it’s a wonderful piece of work. Well done!

  • Hi James,

Beautiful shot! Looks like you went “BIG”! Could you share where or the website of the company of where you bought the mast.

  • Thank you Tony! Kevin, the mast was made by total mast solutions in England. I purchased it second hand from a business in Indiana. It was only a few years old and had barely been used. It is a 58 foot pnuematic mast that included the box, compressor, all wires, software and portable tripod. They had it mounted on a van (and wanted to sell me the van…I didn’t want the additional expense) but I bought a 4×8 enclosed trailer and mounted it on top. It looks great and gives me some great advertising. This link has 2 photos of my setup.

There are some available from time to time craigslist. I do know somebody here on Long Island selling a mast but it is pulley controlled. I think it is about 50 feet high. If you are interested in getting his contact info please let me know. Buying used will get you a great deal.

  • Congrats on the image James and I love the rig! Keep up the great work!

  • congrats! your image is amazing, with a great composition, greetings
