Congratulations To Anders Carlson PFRE Photographer For May

May 22nd, 2013

AndersCarlsonThe PFRE jury has voted Anders Carlson of Kona, HI the PFRE photographer for May. Anders’s winning photograph is on the right. Click on it for a full size image. Anders is a second time winner. He won last May when we had this same theme. One of the jurors made this comment about this photo:

Most of the photos in this months contest suffer from poor framing, poor lighting, and were composed too wide, which de-emphasizes the view, contrary to this month’s theme. This photo has nice, tight framing and is well-lit, although a little more ambient light inside might help fill in the shadows of the pendant lights in the kitchen (although if this was a single exposure that would overexpose the view). This photo stands out for composition and interior lighting, and the icing on the cake is the seamless, layered view, from the inside, to the patio, to the golf course, out to the ocean.

Here are the voting results:

  1. Anders Carlson – 35
  2. Lou Novick – 25
  3. Glenn Johnson – 23
  4. Aaron Flores – 15
  5. Charles Coleman – 15
  6. Don Miller – 8
  7. Christine Bickley – 5
  8. Luke Phillips – 4
  9. Brian Fussell – 4
  10. Dave Ruff – 3
  11. Nestor Trillo – 2
  12. Jim Manson – 1

I’ll be leaving all the photos in the PFRE Photographer of The Month flickr group for the rest of the month and putting the names on all of the photos. There’s a lot to be learned from these photos and the comments jurors and others have made on them. Thanks for everyone’s participation!

Update 5/23: Here are Anders’ comments on creating his winning photo:

Participating in this contest has really helped me a ton in my shoots. Whenever I’m looking at a shot I can literally hear the comments on my photo in my head. Particularly Scott’s. 🙂

That shot was actually somewhat complicated. To start, I was using speedotrons as my main fill, but the power box literally blew up while I was setting up. Probably a blessing in disguise. I only have four speed lights, so I ended up having to move them around the scene and blend the exposures together in post. I lit the inside first then put three of the lights out on the lanai and pointed one straight at the door so I could blend it in with my inside exposures. It was cloudy and hazy for the most part, but the sun peeked out for just long enough to light the golf course. The ocean was kind of a light hazy blue because of the weather so I used the burn tool to darken it up a little. The interior designer was there and did most of the staging. Again, thanks for providing this venue. It’s always fun to read the comment’s on all of the photos and I always value the feedback.

  • Awesome job, Anders! Congrats!

  • Anders’ Three Sixty Images is amazing. He deserved to win. Congratulations to the others too.

  • Congrats Anders! Beautiful home, beautifully photographed, and definitely showed off the great views!

  • Nice work Andy!

  • Amazing photo, any focus stacking to get the extremely deep DOF? I’m impressed with how sharp the golf course is and the edges of the furniture in the foreground at the same time just as much as I am with the lighting!

  • Congrats Andy nice work.
