Coming Soon: Image Editing For Real Estate Photography by John McBay

August 22nd, 2012

I want to announce that some time soon (in the next month or so) I’ll be launching a new eBook titled Image Editing For Real Estate Photography by John McBay.

John is a professional real estate photographer in the Savannah, Georgia area and a long time, active participant in the PFRE flickr group. John has done a great job of documenting how to deal with the classic top 30 real estate editing problems and he’s done it in such a way that the techniques can be used no matter if you use Photoshop, Lightroom or Photoshop Elements. Of course some of these techniques are Photoshop only or Photoshop/Photoshop Elements only. Here is the table of contents that lists these 30 techniques (one technique per chapter). The little PS LR EL indications to the right of the page numbers in the contents indicate which photo-editing software is covered in each chapter.

John covers several of the techniques that have been discussed in the PFRE flickr group over the last several years. Such techniques as Iran Watson’s Flash/Ambient hybrid blending technique (Chapter 30), Anders Carlson’s Inserting an image onto a blank TV screen (Chapter 26) and Charles Lynch‘s technique for capturing the view outside a window. I think John’s book a very useful resource.

John and I are working hard on the final proofing and layout. So stay tuned for the launch announcement.

  • Looking forward to it

  • Much appreciated!

  • Another great resource for photographers working to create high quality RE photography. Keep ’em coming!

  • Great job Larry. I’m glad the book is almost ready. Looking forward to seeing it.

  • Brilliant! Hope the RE photographers in my area don’t get a copy! 😉

  • Sounds good, looking forward to the release!

  • Dang, exactly what I was going to do. Looking forward to seeing it and comparing.

  • I’m sure this is going to be a really great resource: congrats Larry and John for putting it together.

  • John has been one of my contacts for years. I can’t wait until his book comes out. He knows our craft and knows it well. His book will be helpful to everyone from the rank amatuer to the most seasoned pro. I’ll be buying it.

  • I can’t wait. Looks to be very essential.

  • I’m beginning to work on my portfolio, so a book like this will no doubt be a valuable resource as I begin my journey into RE photography.

I’ve done a little travelling in my time, but Savannah is one of my favorite cities to visit. Tons of history, beautiful architecture, and such a unique charm to the whole city. I’m sure I’m very biased as a native Georgian, but I believe Mr. McBay has the best job in the world. Gaining access to some of the most beautiful homes in the country, and having the opportunity to absorb their character through his lens- sounds like heaven! Maybe I should find out if Mr. McBay needs an intern/assistant.

I look forward to the book, this site and all the members and contributors here are one of the most valuablr resources I’ve ever found on any subject on the internet. Keep up the good work, y’all!

  • Sounds great and another good resource for learning!
Any chance of it being applicable to ‘Aperture’ as well ??

  • @Niall- No, unfortunately it doesn’t cover Aperture because barely 1% of real estate photographers use Aperture compared to well over 50% using LR. However, the parts of this book that deal with PS and PSE apply to those that use those applications invoked from Aperture.

  • Any thoughts on adding some video tutorials? I’m particularly interested in flash/ambient blending.

  • @Scott- I also have a project going to do a series of photo-editing video tutorials. Don’t have a schedule for it yet though.

  • I’m in !

  • Great, thanks John and Larry. Looking forward to it’s launching!
