David and Joe Were Awesome In Portland Today!

March 12th, 2011

I spent today at the David HobbyJoe McNally Flash Bus lighting workshop.  As of about 6:00 PM PST today the bus the bus is  on it’s way towards San Francisco for tomorrows’ (Sunday 3/13) workshop and then points east.

The worksop was awesome! Both David and Joe are great teachers. They have totally different styles. David works almost totally in manual flash mode and Joe mostly uses E-TTL mode.

Listening to them is like trying to drink from a fire hose! Some advance warning, David talks from a Keynote presentation but doesn’t give out a copy of the slides. Since they are OK with you shooting photos during the workshop many folks were shooting a copy of the slides so they would have something to study after the workshop so either bring your 70-200 zoom or sit in the front row if you want a copy of David’s slides.

Joe doesn’t use a presentation, he just works through lighting problems on the spot. This gives great insights into problem solving with small flash and is very useful. Again if you want to capture info on his setups and results taking your own shots of the screen at the front of the room would be helpful. Oh, yea they don’t allow shooting video.

  • “Listening to them is like trying to drink from a fire hose!” haha!! I bet. Thanks for sharing the short & sweet summary. I’m going to see them when they hit Austin. Very excited to see them in person! 🙂 Thanks for the tips on shooting the slides/setups. That seemed to be what regularly happened at WPPI.

  • I’m signed up for the event in DC on April 5 … thanks for the tips!

  • Hi Larry,

How did the workshop relate to real estate photography? From what I understand the workshop is better for portrait/studio photography, is that wrong? Thanks!

  • @Anthony- Yea, you are right, the workshop is not real estate photography related. It’s just small flash related. You are right a lot is portraiture. Scott Hargis has translated David Hobby’s approach into real estate and that’s what Scott’s Lighting Interiors book is all about.

Joe McNally is not real estate either but amazingly manages to demonstrate how to light the entire cavernous meeting room at the Oregon Convention Center with 4 Nikon SB-900s. Pretty amazing.

  • I went to the Seattle one. I was not feeling so well that day so I left before the TTL portion. Did not expect such a big crowd. It was good overall. I sort of feel like with out being able to try it out yourself in a short period of time it is not as helpful… at least to me. I wish they would have had the slides printed out or something. I hope they make a DVD of the even that would be nice.

  • Gosh, how did I not know about this? : (

  • Thanks for the feedback. I’m scheduled to see them in DC next month – sounds like it will be great!

  • I just saw them in Denver today and even though they did nothing related to real estate photography, I learned much that could be applied. Time got away from Joe this afternoon and he did not really light the huge room we were in. They said we had 400 there today. I was surprised.

It was a really great experience. Thanks for mentioning this event in the blog back in January! I have really learned so much from this blog since I have been following it (January of 2010) – Thank you!!!!
