A Real Estate Photography Success Story From Antwerp, Belgium

January 3rd, 2011

I got an electronic Christmas Card from PFRE reader Jan Van der Heyden in Antwerp Belgium. (note that Jan’s website is in Dutch and if  you use the Chrome browser his site will be automatically translated from Dutch to whatever language you like).

Jan tells me that despite te fact that he has no background in photography what ever he has just finished his first successful year as a real estate photographer supporting his family of four. Jan says, “Two years ago, I was so busy working for “the company” from 7am to 7pm, I went on for a whole week without seeing my daughter awake once…Crisis hit and I was asked to work even more, longer and harder…And that’s when I knew I had to turn my life around! When I decided to become a RE photographer, I googled and stumbled upon your blog and books. I bought them, subscribed to your blog and got active on the flickr forum but it has always been thanks to you, your work, your willingness to share your knowledge with others. I literally learned everything from you and the guys on the forum! I have now completed my first whole year as a full time professional real estate photographer, business has been good, so has life. I have watched my two kids grow, literally, because I have seen them every single day this year.

I keep posting real estate photography success stories like Jan’s in hopes that more people like Jan will be encouraged to take charge of their own success. I think with these tough financial times in the US, EU and UK it is more important than ever to take change of your own success. If you are working for yourself you are not going to get laid off by “the company”. These success stories like Jan’s demonstrate that it is not only possible but it’s common to make a living as an independent real estate photographer.

Thanks Jan for sharing your success story!

  • Jan,
Congrats on such a wonderful success story! This world would be a better place if more people were willing to follow their passion and (in the process) make a better life for their families. What a testimonial to the cool folks here on PFRE!
