PFRE Idol For November: Nick Jones

November 3rd, 2009

Congradulations to Nick Jones (flickr handle “bit fishy bob“) who has been voted PFRE Idol for Nov 2009 by the PFRE flickr group. Nick serves San Diego County, CA. Nick is the second winner in a row from the San Diego, CA area. Nick’s winning image to the right is some what reminiscent  of Julius Shulman’s famous image overlooking LA.

Thank you so much. I’m really excited to have won! As I said in the Flickr discussion for this month, I owe it all to Daniel Milstein for not entering this month!

Seriously though, after discovering your blog and the Flickr group earlier this year, I’ve been able to take a hobby and turn it into a business. When I first found your blog, I looked at each of the photographers’ websites in the Idol list and never thought I’d be able to produce work which would get me onto that list. To have my work acknowledged by a group of photographers with such experience and attention to detail is amazing.

This shot was taken from a condo in downtown San Diego. It was part of a free promotion (thanks to Scott Hargis’ marketing advice) and was my first twilight shoot. I had two legs of the tripod over the railing of the balcony and was reluctant to let go of the camera.

I started the business a few months ago and I’m slowly building a client base. I’m just really happy that I get to go to work each day doing what I love. The next area I want to tackle is PAP. I’ve already come across several situations where it would be handy…

Thanks again Larry, I’ll be smiling all day.

  • Great photo Nick!!
It is also good to hear someone else saying what we all aspire to….” I love what I do, and it’s great going to work each day”.
We are really” living the dream”!!

  • Nick – Congrats!
It’s a superb image, and commands attention. You have a well-earned win here.

My PR manager was highly amused at your opening remarks, and I’m flattered, but remember that it’s your work that took the prize, and not my lack of an entry. Keep those images coming!
