Real Estate Photography Gear

This is a condensed guide for choosing gear you need to get started in real estate photography.

Key Gear Factors In Real Estate Photography

  1. A quality wide-angle lens: The most important gear for a real estate photographer. You need a lens that has an EFFECTIVE focal length of between 17 mm and 24 mm to shoot interiors.
  2. Manual flashes: These are not essential if you shoot brackets but are very useful when you learn to use them. Best choice is: YN560 IV
  3. Triggering manual flashes: This trigger works for Nikon, Canon, and Sony: YN560-TX
  4. A sturdy tripod: Almost any sturdy tripod will do here is an example: Manfrotto Compact Tripod

Things to beware of

  1. SmartPhones: Smartphones fall short in items #1 and #2 above.
  2. Cameras without interchangeable lens: The popular focal lengths found on most non-interchangeable lens cameras are not wide enough to shoot interiors.
  3. Kit lens are not wide enough for real estate: For example, an 18-55 mm kit lens for a Canon cropped sensor body has an effective focal length of 28.8 mm as the widest angle it can shoot. You need at least a 24 mm or wider lens to shoot interiors.
