This Week In Real Estate Drone Photography News

July 25th, 2014

DJIPhantom2News that affects real estate drone photography is happening so fast these days that it is hard to keep up with it all. I’m trying to keep these drone related posts to a minimum because I know not everyone is interested in them. As I mentioned a while back, I keep up with what’s going on in this area by following Brenden Schulman (@dronelaws, Brendon is Pirker’s defence lawyer) and Peter Sachs (@TheDroneGuy) on Twitter and retweet any of their news stories or items I see that seem to relate to real estate drone photography/video. So if you are interested in this subject you can see the all those tweets down on the right side-bar in the “Last Tweets” widget, just below my smiling face.

Here are some of the more recent happenings that may affect real estate photography:

As I said, there’s a lot going on. Fly safely!

  • Beware that outside of the US using a drone for commercial purposes requires the pilot to hold a license to do so. You fly without but if you charge clients and something happens like your drone crashing onto a car or worse don’t expect your insurance to pay.

  • Its amazing how many companies are flying drones in Canada and from what Im told, without a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC), which is needed for each flight by Transport Canada.

  • Are there any of is that are actually making money with drones? To me it seems more of a novelty for real estate than a real market. But I would love to hear otherwise.

  • Coldwell Banker has BANNED drone use for their agents in New England. They will NOT process or distribute drone-captured images until this is worked out. See article here: http://www.inman.com/2014/07/24/nrt-bans-drone-photography-in-northeastern-u-s/

  • Coldwell Banker/NRT in Florida issued an email warning from their legal department saying not to use drones for yourself as an agent or hire someone with a drone.

  • @Michael & Larry – Yes, NRT made that announcement over 2 weeks ago on 7/11, I did a post on that: http://photographyforrealestate.net/2014/07/11/breaking-news-faa-intimidates-coldwell-banker-and-other-realtors-to-stop-drone-photography/ . That’s why I didn’t include it on this weeks list.

  • The article about the NRT ban in New England that Larry posted on on 7/11 made the observation that a regulation regarding snakes has generated many more comments than the proposed ban. If you fly now or are considering flying in the future, go comment at regulations.gov!
