Terrible Real Estate Agent Photographs

TerribleREphotosIf you need a good laugh have a look at terriblerealestateagentphotos.com. Several people pointed this out to me. So I’ve added it to my official list of sites that show bad real estate photos.

Over the years sites that show bad real estate photo have been hugely popular. Posts about them are some of the highest traffic posts on the blog.

I guess the reason these kind of photos are so funny is that everyone understands what  real estate agents are trying to do, and it’s always so totally amazing that agents find endless ways to screw up photos.

So if you are are just beginning in the real estate photography business this should give you confidence! This illustrates that the bar is pretty low.

  • I would really like to have a some examples of poor vs. professional photos to show to agents. I have my eye out for a cheap P&S camera to take with me on some shoots. My biggest problem is I have worked on improving so much that I can’t compete on the low end anymore. I look at these web sites and wonder how the agents manage to get such horrible pictures. A few of them do look like violent crime scenes. The agents must really be hard up for listings. I guess I’ll have to get a customer to walk through a house first with their camera phone and let me have the photos.

  • I was going to start with the humorous/obligatory line thanking Larry for featuring my photography, but…

    @Ken, I know what you mean about hard to downgrade after training yourself to get it right in camera. Even my cell phone pictures look better when attempting bad. I found I actually had to go into Photoshop, bring in shadows, introduce barrel distortion, slant the verticals, make adverse hue and color adjustments. Skills with Photoshop can work either way and easier than actually taking the bad picture.

  • I’ve found this entertaining like everyone else. Some sites even post the images including the respective MLS marks.

    I’ve always been curious, given copyright considerations, how they manage to keep these sites up. They’re clearly not pursuing permissions for all these photos. And, if your MLS is like some in my region, you’re explicitly not supposed to copy the images for any other use.

  • Sometimes the agent is better off with no pictures or video. Those are not only examples of bad pictures but stupid pictures too.

    I think a better use of this thread would be posting pictures of moderately priced properties where the realtors shoot pictures and videos thinking they’re good enough. Those are the people doing architectural photography the biggest disservice.

  • Having been a photographer in the advertising field, I began shooting architecture years ago. Now that I own a Virtual Tour company, I’ve been appalled at what people are actually using to represent their listings. Add Photo Shop on top of that, and now anyone with a point and shoot camera, or digital, thinks they can do most anything in the area of really bad photography, and sell homes easily.

    Agents really ought to take a serious look at their own photography, ask for opinions from others, and take advice on how not to embarrass themselves. Saving a few bucks on listings will cost you plenty in the long run. Great listing photos will actually help sell a home faster, and at a higher price. Is it worth taking the risk?

  • This is perfect–I’m giving a presentation on (quality) real estate photography to a group of realtors this week. Couldn’t have asked for better examples or better timing.

  • Putting my Realtor hat on, it is rare that I go to a listing appointment and turn down the prospect…but it happened last month. What I find interesting is, when he did re-list this month after trying FSBO for a month – as was his plan – after my personally educating on the value of professional photography and video, he still has shotty photography that the Realtor may have actually paid for, giving the illusion of professional. We met as he responded to my brochure addressing lousy photos and lack of investment by the former agent having a factor in the property not selling, even redefining commission to what it is – seller’s marketing expense. On a listing appointment, I still use the old flip notebook rather than iPad/electronic as I fill the blank page with 8×10 glossies (eye candy) while the other page outlines my services I am presenting. On this $625k home he was insisting that I show, as the buyer’s agent couldn’t do justice. When he related how he impersonated a Realtor showing his own property rather than I identifying self as homeowner, you can begin to see why I didn’t want the listing as he was unpredictable, monopolize my business plan adversely impacting my other clients (both real estate and photography) with his demands, and had a grandiose view of his home that the other (and current) realtor wrote up but isn’t reflected in reality. The home is really worth about $525k. I even discussed a general video story line, (controlled) interviewing him on camera with pans to features that would get his ideas out to the buyer’s agent prior to actual viewing.
    End result- despite the one on one education his hard headedness prevailed. Realtor, relatively new with no other listings and could accommodate his showing demand, probably paid for the photos as tour, while low quality spinning panos framed on 1/8 of screen, is not the one the MLS provides for free. Stills were with an UWA and no skill, every wall slanted, a few with barrel distortion, windows either blown or washed out. Sometimes people are their own worst enemy – and I am glad I don’t have him as a client as what I related only scratched the surface.

  • Yeah!! I know some realtors of my area here that have worse photos yet, and they say that they cant pay a photographer, even they are grumbling about the low sales, what they expect!! sell properties with dark and chaos rooms with a white blow windows even date and hour labelled!

  • Wow, I can’t believe how any of those got used. A great photo is the difference between getting leads on line or not getting any at all, in my opinion. Who’s calling in to follow up on these properties, besides bargain hunters who know they won’t be getting a lot of attention with such ugly photos?
