Goodbye Old Friend: Canon 5D MKII Officially Discontinued

December 30th, 2012

Last week the the 5D MkII was added to the “Old products” list on the Canon Japan site which apparently means that the 5DMKII is now Officially out of production. There is still stock available at most retailers but it probably won’t be long until new 5D MKIIs will not be available.

Of course this is no big surprise.  The writing has been on the wall since the introduction of the 5DMKIII and later the 6D but it feels like saying goodbye to an old friend. Many have pointed out the 5DMKII was possibly the most popular and most influential DSLR ever. As our camera page poll shows the 5DMKII is the most popular DSLRs for real estate photography.

My guess is that there’s going to be a big market for used 5DMKIIs. The new price on Amazon is down to $1799 and you can get one used for a few hundred less. So for the foreseeable future I’ll bet a used 5DMKII will be the least expensive way to move up to a full frame DSLR.

  • It was a game changer! I found a new one as back up this autumn half the price of the III and will run it into the ground!

  • Still amazed at the images produced from the 5D2 . So plan to hang to mine as long as possible. Shooting time-lapses on these devices must shorten their shutter life to a point ?

  • […] After a month of desperate calls to the Irvine repair center and several near-tears-and-nearly-freaking-out trips to the post office I decided it was time to call a loss.  And to make matters worse, I just found out that Canon is discontinuing this particular camera. […]
