What Can A Blog Do For Real Estate Photographer Marketing?

Jon May, real estate photographer on the Australian Sunshine Coast was asking me recently about the subject of doing a blog in addition or associated with his portfolio site. Jon asked, what should I blog about and how can I use it to build your business etc.

Jon started blogging just recently to take advantage of some publicity he got in his local newspaper. Here is his blog. Jon has been shooting early morning portraits on the beach. Great way to meet all the locals and pass out cards.

As Jon said, “…there hasn’t been a spike in visitors to my website, nor has anyone yet left a comment on the blog! To date though I have had two requests to quote on property-related jobs, another from a pregnant woman who would like a sunrise portrait (a paying gig), and a phone call tonight asking when and where I might be next so she can happen by with her dog!”

I admit, I don’t have much experience with this kind of blogging where you want to reach a geographically local audience. I’m more familiar with the approach of reaching a world wide niche. Despite that, here are some of my thoughts on the subject:

  1. I know of many successful photographers that use a blog as a way to keep their clients up to date with what they are currently shooting and other aspects of their business in a more personal way than is possible on a portfolio site. I can recall Aaron Leitz saying that many of his important clients liked to read his blog and stay up to date with what he was doing.
  2. I think a blog can contribute to your personal brand in a very real way. It’s a way for your clients to get to know you more personally.
  3. Don’t expect immediate and huge results from a blog. It takes a while to find your voice and finding something to say on a regular basis.
  4. There are some that claim that you can do the same thing with social media as you can with a blog. For example Tech Angel Investor and entrepreneur, Kevin Rose once a big blogger has recently abandoned his blog for Google+ because he believes it achieves the same result. Perhaps, but with a blog you have total and complete control… you get to make the rules instead of having to follow them.

So what are people’s experiences with blogging about your business? Does it help build your business? What are some of the ways to keep it focused on your target audience?

  • One additional key point: SEO and blogging. Google crawls wordpress blogs very well and if achieving a higher search result rank is important, a blog is one more way to achieve that end. Larry, it’s really funny that you posted this today because I JUST launched my site’s blog this morning at http://pglistings.ca/blog I did this because although my site is organically number one for the search terms that I wanted, consolidating that position is important and a blog can help, along with add other benefits, as mentioned in point one and two. I used to have a blog at blogspot but I found that google doesn’t crawl those nearly as effectively as wordpress blogs so I relaunched.

    One of the things I plan on doing with the blog is doing a lot of comparisons, taking shots with my cell phone at a shoot and presenting it along with the actual image taken with a DSLR at a home in a similar price bracket. I was thinking that to make the blog more fun and interactive, I could post a survey where people could guess the value of the two homes, one price for each image, and maybe the person with the closest price would receive a gift card or something. I was thinking that this might draw people to the site, and agents may take notice, especially if survey results are as revealing as I hope they would be.

  • I’ll leave a comment on your blog, Jon. 🙂 I like the idea of featuring something about the community in which you work, especially doing an ongoing project that may keep people returning to your blog. I would guess that showing you are involved with your community in some way may also appeal to real estate agents.

    My own approach for my blog, http://eichlerphoto.blogspot.com/ , is more formal. The purpose of my blog, initially at least, is to provide information about equipment, techniques and publications that might be of interest both to photographers and clients of photographers, as well as to showcase my work and that of my clients. My immediate goal for my blog is to help with SEO for my portfolio website. However, it is also my hope that eventually my blog will be able to help me to directly enhance my professional image, assuming that I can get clients and prospective clients to read it. To that end I want to be cautious about making the posts too chatty and personal, and in any case I tend to have a rather formal writing style, so I don’t think that I generally do casual that well.

    So far, it has been hard for me to tell if my blog has been doing anything for my SEO or helping to bring in business, but I have only been at it since last November, and it took me several months to start trying to post regularly. Also, I still have a lot of work to do submitting my blog to directories and trying to promote it in other ways. It is a lot of work, but I like to write and report and critique, so that part of it is fun. The purely mechanical stuff is a drag though, especially since it is difficult to know whether the effort is ever going to pay off enough to justify the effort.

    By the way, does anyone have any thoughts about whether the paid blog directories might be of any help for these purposes?

  • I can tell you that blogs do work to bring in traffic, and the stats from my site prove it. I have had a blog for a few years, but was looking at my Google Analytics stats for the first time in a long time in early June and noticed that hardly anyone was visiting my site. In fact, my whole site had just 234 visitors between January and the end of May. So I decided to start blogging again, just a couple of times a week generally.

    Between the start of June and today I’ve had 3600 visitors to my site. Now, that includes all of my blog posts … but does it help to increase visitors to my front page, which just talks about my photography?

    Yes. In May (when I wasn’t blogging) I had 12 visitors to my main index page. In June, 229. In July, 322. In August (and we’re only 5 days in), 79.

    So yes, blogging does help get you hits … and probably photo shoots too (though I haven’t tracked this). You can check mine out by visiting http://www.highshots.com and clicking on “blog” at the top of the page and take a look at the types of posts I’m putting up there.
