My Favorite Real Estate Photos of 2009- Tribute To The PFRE Flickr Group

December 20th, 2009

Since this is the time of the year for best of year reviews, I thought it would be fun to go through the PFRE flickr group postings for 2009 and select my favorites and create a flickr favorites slide show. It took me about 4 hours in two sittings to make it through all the 2009 photos (there are thousands) and choose my favorites. I didn’t do any deep analysis. I just moved quickly through the group postings and picked the photos that grabbed my attention. I ended up leaving several photos from my 2007 favorites at the end of the slide show.

It continually amazes me how many  world class photographers contribute to this flickr group. This talented, self-directed, collaborative, learning environment is amazing to watch in action. Despite the fact that great contributers come and go and there is occasional friction it is an amazing learning opportunity where you can get feedback from many of the best real estate photographers in the world? I again want to thank Aaron Leitz for his great idea to start the PFRE flickr group back in May of 2007.

I can’t help but notice that in my selection process how the look of the thumbnail effected my attention to click on a photo and look a bigger view. Great photos make great thumbnails which is not that surprising but until you do an exercise like this you don’t think much about how important the look of a thumbnail is. As you can also see from this selection I’m a sucker for photos that include something very close and very faraway, photos with a wide full tonal range, strong  graphic composition, reflections and wide range of saturated colors. This is a far less considered selection of photos than the PFRE Idol winner photos but there are 116 photos in my list and only 11 PFRE Idol photos for the year.

Thanks to all those of you that have participated in the PFRE flickr group this year and keep up the great work. For those readers that haven’t started participating in the PFRE flickr group you are missing a great opportunity.

  • What a great gallery of inspiring Real Estate Photography’s Best!! Thanks for taking the time to put it all together!

  • GREAT. Those are fantastic. Many I had not seen and so many of them are truly spectacular. Thanks for putting that together Larry. What a group.

  • Wow. We talk a lot about the use of real estate photography, but this collection proves how many true artists there are among us. Thanks Larry and everyone whose photos were included.

  • Wow, Larry! What a great “PFRE Year in Review” … thanks for taking the time to do this!

  • Great show Larry, I really enjoyed it!

  • Ditto everything above, Larry. Thanks for putting together this great collection, and kudos to all of the photographers!

  • Larry,

Yes these are beautiful shots of beautiful homes. But where are the shots of the ordinary homes. I would love to shoot these homes. I shoot for a virtual tour company outside Toronto Canada and most homes are in the 2000 to 2500 suqare foot size, 3 to 4 bedrooms with a half finished basement in a subdivision without beautiful backdrops. Anyone else in this same boat? I would like to see some shots of these type of homes to gain knowledge and improve my skills. Thanks, Don

  • Outstanding!

  • @Don- Yes, there are a couple of small, modest homes in this collection.. see:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/barlingphotography/4131515659/ Nice simple little brick home
    and http://www.flickr.com/photos/90443840@N00/3400914308/ Modest Bungalow

These are both excellent examples of what great photography can do for modest homes. But the fact is that most agents marketing these small modest homes tend to not hire a photographer so modest homes are under represented in the PFRE flickr group. And then there’s the fact that real estate photographers like to show off their most stunning work.
