The Top 20 Best Selling DSLRs

December 6th, 2009

I like to track the best selling DSLRs because retail sales are in many ways like a voting mechanism. It’s a way to tap into the collective wisdom of camera buyers. When you think about it, there is a lot of brain power going into analyzing features and price. This is a way to see what all that analysis is coming up with. I’d like to have a chart for global sales that covers the top 100 or so cameras, but I haven’t found one yet. The best data I can find is Bob Copeland’s 1001noisycameras.com site.

Bob analyzes Amazon.com DSLR sales data to come up with his Top Selling DSLR charts which he updates about every week. What I like about his chart is it shows the position of each camera as of the last report along with the price trend. So you can tell which models are rising in popularity and price and which are falling. It is interesting to see that the Panasonic GF1 is number 11 and it hasn’t even started shipping. Another nice feature is that the “More” column in the table is a link to a table of links to all or many of the reviews on this camera.

  • Interesting. I would love to see this compared to the advertising budget and or dollars spent in the US market for each manufacturer.
