PFRE Idol For August: Sean Gallagher

August 4th, 2009

Congratulations to Sean Gallagher (flickr handle: © Sean Gallagher), of Dallas, TX , voted by PFRE readers and flickr group members as PFRE Idol for August 2009! See this flickr thread for the detail voting results.

About the photo: This image was captured using a 5D with a TS-E 24mm f/3.5L lens. I find the tilt-shift to be an indispensable lens for interior and to an even greater extent, exterior photography. The sky is actually real, believe it or not, thanks to a fantastic location near downtown Dallas and a big ol’ Texas thunderstorm clearing just as sunset was occurring brought everything together perfectly. The windows were masked in Photoshop and replaced with pixels from an image where the interior lights were shut off to reduce reflections. No strobe was used so that the interesting pattern the vintage light fixtures threw on the wall could be seen. There was some exposure blending (Photomatix) as well, to help tone down some hotspots created by the available light captures.
About Sean: I started my photography career early – growing up in Iowa, I was taking assignments from the local weekly newspaper the sensibly-titled Bettendorf News even before I was old enough to legally possess a driver’s license. In a wave of cost-cutting measures, the paper’s headquarters was moved from a small space across from city hall to the “big” newsroom of it’s parent paper, the Quad-City Times, in neighboring Davenport, Iowa. This put me on the photo editor’s radar. By this time I could drive myself places and frequently visited the newsroom, finally landing an assignment with the daily paper. Soon I was freelancing on a regular basis for them. Next I went to the Missouri School of Journalism (go Mizzou!) to study in its world-renowned photojournalism program. As the industry fell on hard times, I moved away from journalism. But the think-on-your feet skills the photojournalism program at Mizzou taught me how to always capture an image worthy of being on the front page of a newspaper no matter the circumstances, which helps me exceed my clients’ expectations every time no matter the circumstances. Now in the Big D (Dallas, Texas for those of you who may not be familiar with the slang of the Lone Star state), I photograph architecture primarily as well as some corporate work. • Well done Sean!
Thanks for detailing your PP..you put a bit into this one!!
And the use of the tilt lens has me wondering..as I think MJ uses one too, and swears by it. My concern that it may not be wide enough for most interior shots?? I use 17-40 on my 5D and I seem to always hit around the 19-20 area, and at 17, it allows a bit of licence in cropping.
    Cheers Milton
