A Real Estate Photography Success Story in Nanaimo, BC

July 3rd, 2009

Alberto and Mia Dominguez have turned their passion for art, design and photography into a successful business in real estate and commercial photography on Vancouver Island in Nanaimo, BC. They are the official photographers of Homes & Living Magazine.

Mia and Alberto both bring  a diverse creative background in art and design to their company. Mia studied linguistics at La Sorbonne in Paris and art at the Louvre Museum’s school of Arts. Alberto studied industrial design at the School of Arts in Bogota and founded his own furniture and interior decorating business where he worked as a successful designer and entrepreneur for over 17 years.

In 2000, Mia and Alberto moved their family to Canada, coming to Nanaimo in 2006 after a holiday that convinced them they had found paradise on Vancouver Island. They founded Nanaimo Virtual Tours.

There are several things that impressed me about Alberto and Mia’s work:

  1. The opening photo presentation on their site is impressive! Large photos, automatically presented series of very strong photos. This makes a strong real estate photography pitch in and of itself.
  2. As you can see from their images, they use a mixture of lighting approaches depending on what the situation calls for.
  3. They do their own Flash tours and slide shows. This enables them to create custom tours for different situations and different customers. Mia says this ability to customize tours has be come a signature feature of their services. Here are some examples:

I think Mia and Alberto’s success is another example that Herb Dierks’s principle that says, “Great images are only half of the solution. Great presentation and wide accessibility is the other half of the equation”. Mia and Alberto have certainly mastered the great images and great presentation part of the formula.

  • What stands out most is their composition. But of course I’d love to know how they lit/made the interior images in their intro. HDR, magical strobe placement, or a combination?

  • Hello Michael,
    Thank you for your comments.
We use HDR in some cases but most of the time we use strobes. We get better results and more clarity with strobe placement. We enjoyed very much your images of San Diego from your website. Great shots and what a beautiful city!

  • Very, very nice indeed!!

  • Very nice lighting techniques. I am interested in architectural photography and your shots are something to aspire toward. Would love to see how you do it with strobes.
