PFRE AU Flickr Group and Discussion Forum Trial

October 5th, 2008

Recently some Australian participants in the Photography For Real Estate flickr group suggested that it would be nice to have a discussion forum where the unique business and market considerations of Australia could be discussed separately from the global discussion of real estate photography that goes on, on the current PFRE flickr group.

This idea lead to a discussion of whether flickr was the best way to do that or a dedicated discussion forum that has more robust discussion features. There are pros and cons to both approaches and I’ve learned that these kinds of questions are best resolved in a collaborative approach rather than me trying to make a unilateral decision based on my small “knot hole”.

The one thing that is clear to me is that the current PFRE flickr group is very useful to everyone and has been growing very rapidly. I don’t want to do anything to stand in the way of that group’s tremendous success and usefulness. Yet I believe it is possible that refinements or additions to the current flickr group could also be valuable. So I’ve implemented two additions to the current PFRE flickr group:

  1. The Photography For Real Estate AU flickr group. This is for discussions that are unique to Australia. All threads on this group must begin with “G’day”;) It’s essentially a clone of the PFRE group. If this is popular and useful we could do the same for other areas too.
  2. The Photography For Real Estate phpBB forum. This is for people that would like to use a more robust discussion forum than flickr offers.

I consider the phpBB forum a trial. If there is significant membership and use we can make it a regular feature of PFRE. If someone can convince me that it in anyway interferes with the success of the current PFRE flickr group I wouldn’t hesitate to take it down either.

Notice that I have new links to both of these discussions on the PFRE blog right side-bar under “PFRE Flickr Links”.

  • I like the idea of phpBB forum and would be easy to incorporate a county based forum directly into that site.

Will the new forum interfere with the currect site – Yes. However, I would view this as an upgrade. In general you can do anything on the phpBB forum you can do here, plus several more. One of the biggest things is that the users will have signiture links. These will help with the member’s sites SEO. Also, topics can be groupped to allow for easier discusions.

  • It’s a shame. It appears that the first few topics of discussion in the new group would really be applicable to everybody in PFRE.

  • Larry- Yes, it took me a while to wrap my mind around the need for more forums because I always thought that the existing flickr forum was such a roaring success but I’ve come to believe that having more options can’t be all that bad. I don’t think this will slow down the main flickr group that much. I love the global diversity! Now when you want to find the Aussies you know exactly where to find them:)

Also, it was only about 6 months ago that I learned how different the real estate business is in Australia. They don’t have MLSs.. everything is sold via auctions and the sale is closed on the spot. Inspections and financing has to be worked out before you bid in the auctions. In June I had dinner with a Australian RE agent and he explained how everything works… I was amazed.

  • I think you will find that in OZ the results are usually based on some very good retouchers.
Most of us are struggling to earn a good dollar.
    Sign of the times.

  • Greetings I’m new here
And it looks like a interesting forum, so just wanted to say hello! :) :):)
    And looking forward to participating.
Going on vacation for a few days, so i’ll be back
