Meet PFRE Idol- Tyra Pacheco

August 6th, 2008

In the first PFRE Idol contest two contestants tied for first place. One of the winners was Tyra Pacheco. Those of you that frequent the PFRE flickr photo discussion group will recognize Tyra’s work and notice how much her work has improved over the last year. This is Tyra’s kitchen shot that she submitted to the contest and one of my favorites. I like the nice even lighting of this shot. If you look through Tyra’s portfolio you will notice that the even some what diffuse lighting is a consistent look in her work.

Here is what Tyra says about her background and real estate photography business:

It was quite by accident that I started shooting professionally. Although I have been taking pictures since I was a kid, becoming a photographer by trade was something I never seriously considered.

About two years ago, I was approached by the real estate editor at the newspaper for which I have been writing for several years. The author of a weekly real estate column had given her notice, and she asked if I would be interested in taking over. The feature highlights one house for sale each week, with a 800-1000 word descriptive article and several full-color photographs. The previous writer was also a photographer, the editor told me, but I could coordinate my house tour appointments with the photography department and they could have someone meet me at each property.

I knew absolutely nothing about shooting interiors when I not only agreed to write the column, but also offered to provide the art. I immediately dragged out my Nikon D50 and set about photographing my living room to practice—using only the pop-up flash. After my second house tour, I invested in an SB-600 speedlight and a Gary Fong Lightsphere. Several months later, I stumbled upon the PFRE Flickr group, and the rest is history.

In January, I decided to start my own photography company, specializing in real estate images. SouthCoast Images is based in SouthCoast Massachusetts, which is approximately 50 miles south of Boston. I am still writing for the newspaper on a freelance basis, while working to build my business.

Among the many cameras I have owned are something that took 126 film, a Kodak Disc camera, a couple of Minolta point-and-shoots and a Kodak Easy Share before I bought the Nikon N80 film SLR. Several years later, I sold the N80 to buy the D50—which was recently stuffed into the spare bag when I moved on to the D300. Most often, I shoot real estate with the Tokina 12-24. Although I resisted off-camera lighting for as long as I could, I now shoot with four SB80DXs, plus the original SB600 flash. My latest adventure was aerial photography, which I plan to do more of in the months to come.

Congratulations Tyra keep up the great work.
