The best document I've seen with the proper mix of theory and practical application is:
http://www.naturescapes.net/072006/rh0706_1.htm
It is now a little dated, published in July 2006. For example, you don't need separate RAW conversion software. Photomatix Version 2.5.1 handles RAW files directly making the process even simpler. I am also searching for the right time to "do" color balance. I'm not sure if it should be before or after shooting RAW. The above referenced document says to leave your camera on auto. However, he is an "out doors" shooter. I also don't know why a plain "white" sheet, either cloth or paper, doesn't make for an OK color balance tool.
