What’s On The Radar For Lightroom?
January 20th, 2008
There seems to be allot of talk about what’s next for Lightroom. Perhaps it’s just because Macworld was last week. Steven Shankland over at CNet has an article about a discussion he had with Kevin Connor, the Adobe executive that manages the Lightroom and Photoshop products. Kevin says that it’s not out of the question to expect HDR processing and panorama stitching. That would be cool! This discussion gives more clarity to Adobe’s vision of what the difference is between Photoshop and Lightroom in the area of editing. Connor says: “We want to stay true to optimizing what you saw when you shot it.”
Scott Kelby has a post on his blog about what he’d like to see added to Lightroom after doing Lightroom seminars for almost a year. Wow, what a list! I’d be happy with one third of this!
I have to say that I’m with Scott. Lightroom has changed my workflow for good. The single thing I’d like to see added to Lightroom is the Photoshop CS3 Lens correction filter. I really don’t like to have to leave Lightroom to do lens correction. Based on Kevin Connor’s quote above, that Adobe sees Lightroom as optimizing what you saw when you shot it, it seems realistic to expect that some day this might happen.
Since I frequently get questions about why I don’t tryout Aperture and talk about it, I thought the user comment titled “Meanwhile, Aperture users…” on the CNET article was very insightful. This nicely sums up why I’ve never been motivated to tryout the Aperture demo version that came on my MacBook Pro.

Larry, I’m with you on the Lens Correction… I wait for that since the beta… Hopefully in the next release… ( I said this 3 times already)

I’ll buy it when they add lens correction.

I’ll buy it when it won’t touch my filesystem and it’ll perform like a native application.

I’ll buy it if someone can explain why it’s better than a Bridge / Camera RAW / PS CS3 workflow, as I’m really efficient w/ Photoshop by itself.
