Julius Shulman Photos this Month on ArchitecturalDigest.com
August 16th, 2007

This month ArchitecturalDigest.com has images by the great Architectural Photographer Julius Shulman. These photos are a retrospective look at photos of architecture designed by the famous architect Richard Neutra.
Is that a light reflecting in the far window? We have to cut Shulman some slack… he didn’t have Photoshop to fix reflection problems.

Looking at the shadows, not a light reflection, but a speedlight almost hidden behind the curtains.

I have an opportunity to meet Julius Shulman (I am friends with Richard Neutra’s grandson who knows him). Anyway I have a book by Mr. Shulman called “Malibu: A Century of Living by the Sea” and some of the homes look as if they are lit by a small strobe alone. For those of you who have this book, look on page 195 - bottom photo. To me, it is not a very good photo. I don’t quite understand his reasoning for doing this - other than maybe he was pressed for time. It looks as if he just aimed a strobe in the center of a dark room. Anyway, I love most of his work and cannot wait to meet him! He’s 95 I think and has invited me to go on a photo shoot with him soon. I hope to learn by watching him shoot a home.

David,
Wow what an opportunity it is to meet and go on a shoot with Julius Shulman. I’d like to hear how it goes and be interested in any observations or things you learn while working with Mr. Shulman.
